I just got a new cat from a shelter. He was declawed and should not be outside. Every time I leave the house for any reason he attempts to follow me. He does this with all rooms of the house so I don't think he wants out as badly as he just wants to follow me.

I have put treats down in the kitchen, but he is too smart. The second he sees me heading for the front door he runs up!

Please help me! I want to keep my cat safe!

[I live alone, no one else can hold the cat.]

[Also, I have tried pushing him away with my foot, but I am still concerned he will try to jump over my foot. He has already and is very quick!]

Two ideas...1) get a spray gun, keep it with you and when he tries to follow you, give him a spray. He probably will not associate it with you directly, but will associate it with trying to get outside. We used spray guns to successfully rid our cats of their only bad habit, trying to get under the recliner chair. Its harmless, they just don't like it.
2) This will seem weird at best and it might not work for all cats, but as a rule cats do not like to walk on tin foil, or aluminum foil. So if you can tape down a foot or two of it in front of the exits that might keep him from walking on it. Anyway, good luck!

One idea that has worked for my cats is to have a toy near the door to distract him so the cat will play with the toy and forget about wanting to go outside. I found my cats love hiding and playing in open paper shopping bags, so leave 2 or 3 near the door. If you leave a scratchpost nearby with catnip rubbed into it, the cat will choose to play with that over sneaking outside any day. An alternative to distraction is to put something on a plate by that door that your cat hates the smell of. Onions worked for my cats. Good luck.

"I just got a new cat from a shelter". I think therein lies your answer. He wants to go where you go. When he is comfortable in his new home, he will stop trying to run out the door. My cat did the same thing, all tho I live in an apartment building with indoor hallways. She stills follows me from room to room but no longer wants to run out the front door.

Once it is comfortable in your house and feels at home, it will not want to run out so much. It's not about treats just yet, it's about it's animal adrenaline telling it to run away.

Give it time and be sweet to it. Also, if you have a quiet room that you could put all of it's food and litter box in, that would help also. Maybe a window where it can watch birds and squirrels or something also...

I have a ten year old cat and he tries to get outside all the time--it's just what they do---they want to go where you go. After a while it will get easier---just shoo him away from the door before you open it---and when you return just open the door a tiny bit until you see where he is before going on in. That usually works for me.

Everytime your cat tries to get outside just push him away from the door gently with your foot.

Don't kick the cat, just gently push with your foot. Then leave.

save the sink packed with water while no longer in use - squeeze some lemon in it for stable degree. The cat could come to the top that its no longer a stable place to flow potty coz it is going to intend getting his paws and legs moist. you may could desire to try this in basic terms for a quick time - couple of days or so - in basic terms long sufficient to cajole cat that sink isn't stable place to potty.

Can you have someone at home put your cat in another room when you leave, then let him out right when you leave your house?

I used to pet my cat on the sofa, beofre leaving and a bit of a snuggle and he soon got the message, I wasn't leaving him.
He is scared you are leaving. Best wishes.
