It depends on where you are. Ideally the trash will be sorted by manual, magnetic, hydraulic or mechanical means. The materials that can be recycled will be. The rest goes to landfill facilities or out to sea for disposal.

In certain municipalities such as BMC i.e. Mumbai, you are supposed to segregate your garbage into wet and dry. You can reduce or completely stop generating wet garbage by vermicomposting, which can also be done in building compounds collectively. But I dont think most people do, though some Societies are particular about it. The BMC garbage truck comes at regular intervals, collects all the garbage and dumps it at designated dumping grounds. Undoubtedly a lot of it gets dumped at sea otherwise we wouldnt be seeing so much plasticky flotsam on the beaches.

Last first very little is separated from it if the disposer doesnt do it. Most in the U.S.A. goes into landfills. Now if we dispose of it to be recycled then many good things happen. We need to encourage more recycling efforts and do it at the personal level not just at the community level. We need to advertise the advantages of it globally and encourage it at all levels of government. Government offices of all types are the worst for recycling. Schools should be the epitamy of recycling effort but they dont even try.

It depends on what your local government or waste disposal company does. It may be buried, it may be burned, or it may be dumped in the ocean. In some cases, part of it may be recycled, but usually not. Any recycling is usually done by a special bin that you get and are instructed to put certain recyclable waste in, such as paper, glass, plastic or whatever. I am not aware of any company or government that separates recyclable material out from common waste.

Great you thought about it.
How about avoiding throwing things in the dustbin in the first place. do know how much it would save right from the production stage of what you ultimately throw in the dustbin.

okay...first, i would like to note that most things that we think can go in the common recycle bin can not....here we have a sepperate place to take the majority of plastics, glass, and metal...the normal recycle system does not handle most(and we live in a very progressive city)...i urge everyone to look into their own area...as this is likely the case...it is not commonly known...second, our trash gets mainly put into our local landfills...which have a tendancy to leak very harmful pollutants into our earth and water systems...third, some gets put in the ocean...depending on where you live, fourth, some gets burned, and fifth, our country(united states)has also flown a large ammount of trash out of our country to deposit it in other less developed countries to then leave or burn or burry
