ok, y'all. it's me again. my husband says he worked in the navy, first in hawaii (pearl harbor) degowzing (destroying electomagnetic fields) under and around ships so that the enemy couldn't detect them. none of this shows on the dd214, so i'm wondering if anyone knows what this is.

It's spelled "degaussing" and it wasn't meant to prevent detecting ships, it was to protect them against weapons known as magnetic mines. The mines were attracted to the steel hulls of ships and would explode on contact. Mines were a serious threat to ships then, and have only gotten much more sophisticated and dangerous in the intervening years.

Sounds like a trust issue.

It's essentially the same process you use to degauss your computer screen every so often.

Over time, ships can accumulate an electrical charge that then produces a magnetic field that can be detectable by various devices. Degaussing neutralizes the electrical charge and the magnetic field.

Yes but I don't know exactly how to explain it.I'll try.! Ships are made of steel and steel retains magnetism,Radar reads magnetism and can zero in on the ship and send magnetic sensor seeking ammo at the ship as it follows the magnetic field.Degowzing the field takes the magnetic field away and then it can't be seen by the radar or the ship does not appear at all on that radar screen.

It's Navy "degaussing." Look up "degaussing" on wikipedia.com. It's exactly what you're husband said it is. It's when you sweep something clean of anything giving off an electromagnetic field that might interfere with communication or give away a location.

it wouldn't show on the DD 214, but the command he was at while doing that would.

degaussing is a valid practice that ships must go through every few years or so.

It is meant to min. the detection by magnetic mines.
The Navy had system in a lot of ship coils that are wrap inside to do just that.

I think you are talking about the "Philadelphia Experiment" Which was nothing by a hoax.

It is a semi-secret operation known as Operation Lodestone. NCIS agent Tony DiNozzo is undercover in this operation to make sure that the Chinese can't learn of the technology.
