I worked in a busy salon for many years and there were few things that bothered me more than to have a parent come in and stand over me while I cut their childs hair, giving me instructions the whole time.
There was no way for the child to offer his/her own opinions as the parent was always too busy instructing me on 'what to do'.
I saw many a teary eyed child just sitting there wondering when the torture would end.
Parents, don't do this. Its just wrong. Children at this age are testing their boundaries and trying to take a little control over their lives. Let the 'hair' be the one place you allow your children to 'voice an opinion' and get 'heard'.
Let your son do what he wants. If HE doesn't like it, cut it off for him, but if he does like it, let him be. It won't last forever and he will change his mind again and hopefully opt for something a little less shocking.
As for the color, you can safely use SEMI permanent colors on children under 6 years old. He is too young to have permanent color applied to his hair. These are really strong chemicals and its just not safe for younger children to be around them. This is a safety issue only!
Semi permanent colors last about a month. If he likes the red color then you can use it again as the color fades. If not, his hair will revert back to its natural color. No harm, no foul.

At six my son wanted to grow his hair long, after a much long heated debate, I let him do it...it gave him a sense of making his own decision and it wasn't permanent. He had it long until he was 12 and then all of it came off and we have seen it uncut since. I guess there are worse things out there than a mohawk, I say let him make his own statement...

I don't think it's a good idea. Yeah it's hair and it grows, but you might be sending the wrong message to people. Sometimes parents need to step in and say "no". Try the faux hawk idea... just comb his hair up, and try temporary or wash-out dye... kids are very fickle and going all the way probably is a bad idea.

No. A six year old shouldn't have a choice in the matter. You should be teaching your child how to be presentable. If you allow this type of behavior at this age, just imagine what it is going to be like when he's 16, rebellious and out of control.

Yes! Go ahead and let him have his stupid mohawk. lol
Don't "dye" his hair red. Just colour it with red food colouring (it washes out!)
Mohawks look dumb, but your kid doesn't understand what is a dumb fashion statement and a civilized one, yet.. He is only 6. (hopefully he'll understand someday, lol)
Luckily it's just hair. Hair can be cut, and hair grows back.
When he starts asking for his ears to be pierced and tattoos, then you'll have to put your foot down! lol
Cheers

as quickly as my son is sufficiently old to declare what hiarstyle he needs i'lll say decide for it. If he needs a multicolored mohawk with spikes i'm going to declare do it. i'm not likely to interferr together with his real looking how my mom placed a quick leash on me. i'm going to enable him bypass

Yes! Lets remember: its only hair. and he's a kid.
Its one thing if he asked once after seeing someone else with it,but for 2 years; go ahead. in 3weeks he'll need a new cut anyway.

If he's been begging you for two years, I would let him try it. He is out of school for the summer, yes?
