I have 3 kids. A five year old, a three year old, and an 18 month old. I have expressed to my husband that I am not comfortable with them being on a 4 wheeler. Yet, when we have gone over to his brother's house, I look out the window and see them riding in one. They are not going super fast, so I'm not worried that way. And, if they were riding with his brother, I'd feel better. But the fact is, they ride around with their kids (their kids are 13 and 15). I don't feel this is safe. What is your reaction?

I believe no child should be on a 4 wheeler no matter what, specially when they are of such young age. You never know when something could happen that might end in a tragic accident even if they are going slow. You do not mention if they are wearing helmets or not; which makes the issue even worse.
You should talk with your husband and let him know that 4 wheelers are not toys. That it is vehicle, just like a car. why then is it okay to put them on a 4-wheeler where they are even less protected in case of an accident?
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends that children under the age of 16 not be allowed to ride adult-sized ATVs. The vehicle manufacturers also discourage use by persons under the age of 16. Nationally, children under the age of 14 account for approximately 40 percent of the ATV-related deaths and injuries that are reported.
Just look at the news:

I hope you can change your husband's mind about this... better to be safe than sorry...

Depends on the child. Obviously my 9 yr old wouldn't be allowed to run it by himself. He has ADHD, ODD and OCD. I couldnt trust that he would be safe and follow rules. But my 11 yr old is mature, follows instruction and is unlikely to do more than a sedate pace anyway. So I would allow her to run it. You can not make all decisions based on age alone. Maturity, training and choices they have made are far better criteria. There is a vast difference between an 11 yr old who still sucks her thumb and plays dolls and an 11 yr old who is babysitting, helping with meals and has gone through puberty. Parents should be allowed to decide what they feel is best. Should Mozz allow her 9 yr old to play with a 4 wheeler? Nobody but Mozz can answer that. Considering the intelligence Mozz shows I wouldnt second guess her decisions.

Raise the ante. Tell him the kids are not going over there again until he commits to not allowing them on the 4 wheeler. Besides that, one of the teenagers is very likely to accidentally run over one of them. The 4 wheelers should not be out when you and your kids are over there.

I would never allow this. My friends son has permanent brain damage from riding around the backyard with his brother on a 4 wheeler. He also had on a helmet.

Its not safe. They are not toys or carnival rides (which probably arent all that safe either) In middle school my 13 year old friend flipped one and died.
Even the industry puts this information out that they are not safe for kids or anyone without proper training.
Get them off of it.

I think you have every right to voice your opinion about the safety of your kids. Simply make it a rule that your kids must ride with a responsible adult. I would be the same way you are.

It would have to depend on the older children. Hopefully the teens are not wild irresponsible jerks. If they are trustworthy, Than maby tou would feel comfortable only letting your 5 year old ride with them, with supervision and safety gear. The 2 smaller children I feel should only be with responsible adults.
