the s3 is the better choice.
I have read bad reviews on the 550.

If Zoom is the deciding factor, then the Olympus will keep you happy for a long time. And for 200$ more than the Canon, it is a bargain. Also, it starts at 28mm wide, and is marginally more practical than the Canon which starts at 36mm.
(I have purchased this camera 3 days ago and I am simply loving it.) It gives me a zoom range which is unheard of in digital cameras till today. Only an SLR offered so much zoom, but you will have to pay 500$ for the lense alone and you cant use such a heavy lens without a tripod. so forget about snapping the Big foot from the comfort of your 4 wheel drive with one hand on the steering and an SLR, with a big lens in the other!
Amazing camera... yeah the autofocus at the tele end is a bit slow... but so is the Canon or any camera with more than 10x of zoom.
If you are not zoom obsessed, then i presume you will not have compared these two cameras.. so i am not mentioning anything about the other aspects...

Reading a good review site is next only to physically trying out a camera as you would already know. So do check out dpreview if you havent done already. Lot of flaws with olympus 18X zoom camera.

No. No matter how much more you pay for it it will still be an Olympus.

No. Read this first - all 18 pages. Or at least the conclusion.

There are some good opinions, but there are some detractors:
