My son's been disabled for year and on SSI. His father left, paid not support, etc. Father is now dying and about to turn 72. Will my son be able to benefit or collect any of his SS?
Someone told me, son would go off SSI and collect his SS instead. Is that possible?

You may be able to collect survivor's benefit if you are caring for his disabled child.

His son may be able to collect survivor's benefit if he's under 18 or under 19 and a full-time high-school student. He may also be able to collect benefits if he was disabled prior to age 22 and has remained continususly disabled.

Contact your local SS office once the father passes.

I am wondering why your son is not collecting SS disability instead of SSI ?

But in any event, I would contact the local office of SS and explain what is happening. I think that once the father dies, the son can start to collect SS disability. You should have a social worker and you should probably contact that person also.

It's possible to collect on his fathers. What you need to do is find out how much that would be compared to what your son presently collects then go for the higher of the two.

If the father is dying, he should apply for his social security benefits. You child is entitled to his benefits until he turns 19 or 20. I just did this with my son. His father is dying, I took him to court for support, found out he was sick, his lawyer advised him to apply for social security, he saw the doctor's, won his case and now I collect 604 a month in child support.
