Living on the end of a chain sounds like a miserable existance. If you live in a place where safety is an issue & your parents don't want to put up a fence so he can have some kind of descent quality of life, like exercise & safe place to live, then maybe you should consider finding him another home. I know you like your dog and all & I'm sure you spend as much time with him as you can, but he doesn't have much of a life on the end of a chain, waiting for you to come home. You said he couldn't defend himself on the chain at night. How can he defend himself on a chain during the day???? You should really give some serious thought to doing what is right for your dog.

Thats just mean for white bread to say. You dont just go shooting animals because they are not behaving the way you want to. IF he's 80lbs a fence might not even stop him from running with strays. Was he a stray that came to you or did you have him as a puppy? My suggestion would be to bring him in at night. and if that can't happen then you should try a fence and if that don't work then consider letting someone who has enough time, energy and most of all room for him to adopt him.

Is this ? for real?

First of all, u should NEVER tether a dog on a chain in your yard. talk about getting hurt......... he's a target at high risk from any stray or pack that wants to attack HIM, right in your own yard. You talk about him defending himself AT NIGHT? he can't defend himself being chained up during THE DAY either! Its also too confining and Not healthy for him.

Besides providing love and attention, consistenly, YOUR responsibility is to keep him safe, well fed and take him to the vet for shots and check ups. Im not trying to sound mean or rude... if u don't have the proper environment or funds to provide these three things then u shouldn't have a dog. It comes down to being selfish, to have a dog that is constantly in harms way, being imprisoned in all weather conditions and loose all night just for the sake of u wanting a dog. If these providing these things are beyond your control, u shouldn't own a dog until they are. Im sorry your parents are unwilling to provide them, but that's their call. you should turn this animal over to a rescue/shelter so that it is safe and cared for and has a chance to find an owner willing AND ABLE to provide for him. I hope that u love and care for this dog, enough, to do what is best for HIM.

oh my... sounds like you need a fence. You should really invest in a fence. He is frustrated by the chain, and you are only making it worse by keeping him on it all day. Maybe you have a garage that he can go in at night? You may even want to invest in a fence and the aid of a good trainer to work with you and your dog to get the dog crate trained so he can come in at night and sleep peacefully.
I also have a feeling you need to spend more time playing with your dog. He craves to be part of a pack, and while you should be a part of his pack, his crew is the strays. You are flirting with illness and injury and possible biting and major behavioral issues at this rate.
Please, get a fence and a good trainer, and most important, spend extra time with your dog.
Or find a new home through a rescue for him.

YOur dog should NEVER be off his leash so that he can run around.

Bring him inside at night - don't you realize that dogs are pack animals - and prefer to be with their pack (that's you and your family).

But your dog should never be off his leash and allowed to roam the neighborhood at any time of the day.

If you can't fence your yard, buy one of those portable dog fences - or just keep him on the chain until you can bring him safely inside.

Sounds like you have tried to solve the problem, but your perants are not willing to help. If a fence is not an option for you then go to a pet store and get a crate. Check petco they're having a sale on dog crates. Good luck.

Talk about an irresponsible dog owner... Try taking him inside at night. Or put up a fence around him so that he can't run away. But turning him loose only encourages him to run. Why should there be a difference in defending himself between being tied up or running loose, except that he wouldn't be able to escape a predator. If it's that dangerous for him outside, you should bring him inside or better yet find another home for him.

Is there a place in a garage, basement, or shed that the dog could be put at night?

I understand that you can not make the best decisions for this animals because you are not the one in charge of the final answers.
but letting hime run at night is risking his life, and getting a ticket from animal control.

I hate to answer a question with a question but, Why can't you bring your dog inside at night? Why even have a dog if he is going to have to live his life outside. Dogs are pack animals and he is most likely running off with the local strays as he considers them his family since you are not allowing him to be a part of yours.

Why don't you just bring him inside. I don't know your circumstances, but I believe that dogs should not be left outside at night. It gets cold and it could rain or something. A dog is a living being it should be treated as such.
