Varies from state to state. Depending on the crime you misstated, you could do some time; probably a fine and probation.

Within my own state and jurisdiction:

False reporting to law enforcement authorities.

(a) A person commits the crime of false reporting to law enforcement authorities if he knowingly makes a false report or causes the transmission of a false report to law enforcement authorities of a crime or relating to a crime.

(b) False reporting to law enforcement authorities is a Class A misdemeanor.

When filing a false report you waste precious manhours that could be spent investigating actual offenses or preventing crime.

Next time you see a "heated debate" in this forum about how "cops should be out arresting this instead of doing that"....consider what they're stating! Law enforcement takes a lot of "heat" from the public...this is a good example of where law enforcement spends their time.

Best wishes.
