I had this problem my whole life until I finally gave in and started buying shampoo and conditioner at the salon. It is expensive but it works.

My hair is the same, very coarse and rough. Finally I realized it was my genes at work, so I decided to go with it. I use Biolage Smoothing Conditioner (Matrix), available at salons. Another one I've used that is good when you can't get to the salon, is Pantene for Brunettes (not sure of your hair color, but there are the Pantene for Blondes, and Redheads, also). My hair grows almost a full inch each month and it is down to my waist now. I sometimes straighten it with a flat iron; mostly I use curl defining cream and leave it wavy. Having coarse and rough hair is a good thing- it is very strong and tolerates a lot of abuse! Good luck...
