I was woken in the middle of the night with pain in my lower left abdomen and lower back.

Any ideas what it might be? Thx

wow...the pain was severe enough to wake u from sleep, huh!
Two differential diagnoses come to mind quickly: it could very well be a case of nephrolithiasis (kidney stones), or it could be appendicitis (less likely, but possible). Have u been having any fever? any difficulty urinating, blood in the urine? Does ur back hurt when u touch it? Have someone make a fist and lightly tap their fist on ur lower back, and see if it hurts. Make sure they do it on both sides. This is actually an exam that checks for "Costovertebral tenderness" (CVA tenderness for short). If it does hurt, it's a sure sign that u might have kidney stones, but the most definite way to go is to see ur doc and have him do an ultrasound on you. Don't worry, 95% of stones pass on their own in the urine; others might have to be removed by lithotripsy )crushing the stone with laser treatment). Just make sure u drink LOTS and LOTS of WATER!
Take care, and i hope u feel better.

I do not know what you have and the fat that I am not girl may make a difference in my answer. All my life I've been a nervous person and this has causes me a terrible problem. When I get super nervous my lower left abdomen pain intensely, like if there were a knife trying to cut through. Well over time I have figured that this is caused from my nervousness and that, what I believe is my small intestine, bloats and stretches, therefore my pain. I don't know if this is any help, but I have a pain similar to yours. If you are a nervous person, I would advise to control yourself on your emotions as I have. This is the only way I can prevent the pain. But if you are not a nervous person, than you might have a cyst in your ovary as someone wrote before. You might want to buy a magnetic therapy bed. I saw on a Spanish channel that they can cure these illnesses if not too advanced. I would have bought one but am under age and don't have money. Might help? don't know.

Slept in bad position? Kidney problem? If it continues, I would visit my doctor.

Doctor's may refer to this as "flank" pain. Read these WebMD links about different flank pain cases:
