Your driving examiner will expect you to put your car into neutral and put handbrake on while at the traffic lights...regardless of what your hubby says

Yes put your handbrake on but make sure you have not got the car in reverse as I did on test many years ago. Don't move off until the light is green
A green light does not mean go. It means proceed if safe to do so which is slightly different

If at the front of the queue, handbrake on in neutral. Clutch up.
On amber, clutch down, first gear, about 5-6000 revs, handbrake off and dump clutch. Pull away from the line in a big cloud of smoke, leaving the boy racer in his Citroen Saxo at the line! Terrific.
This is the most fun way to do it, I'm not sure it is in the highway code yet tho...

My driving instructor (who was employed by BSM) told me the following:-
At Traffic Lights you put the gears in Neutral and the Handbrake on. You only put it in gear and release the handbrake when the lights turn green.

Handbrake on, gears in neutral, to start with anyway. That's what an examiner will expect from a novice driver.
Into gear & prepare to move on the amber, don't move until the green shows and only then if it's safe to do so (that last bit is important).

Assuming you are at the front of the queue: it depends whether or not the lights have just changed to red or if they have been red for a long time. if the lights have just changed put your handbrake on and if you want to put the car in neutral - its up to you, sometimes its helpful to leave it in first gear, if you are sure the lights will change pretty soon as in just as you get to the line - brake, put the car in first and go.
i always prepare and get my bite point at the amber light.
if you are a few cars back then put the handbrake on and in neutral, because you have more time to prepare.

At the lights come to a halt, apply the hand brake and put the car into neutral. When they change to amber go into first gear, get your biting point, lights change to green release the hand brake and away you go.
Good luck with the test.

Handbrake, neutral. Get some proper lessons before you start driving with your husband so you at least get the basics.

Clutch in - all the way, handbrake on (handbrake goes on if your waiting for above 7 seconds) you don't need to find your biting point if your stopping.
If your 1st / 2nd in line you may not want to take the car out of gear (as you may try to rush and panic) but if your a few cars back you can take it out of gear.
As it turns amber you should release you handbrake then find your biting point and apply some slight pressure to the accelerator
