For the love of it, and to try to get that one final shot at glory. Pretty much the same reason Richard Petty, Darrell Waltrip, and lots of others that stayed too long that kept on racing too.
As said, Kyle isnt the first driver to try for that final shot at glory, and he wont be the last.

You know what, this past weekend Kyle Petty and his team raced smart. He had Jimmie Johnson's tire come right off the hood of his car and he made it through the mess that followed without wrecking. He didn't bobble at all when Tony Stewart came three wide between Kyle and another driver. And they conserved fuel when they could and didn't have to pit when the leaders at the time did. He was in the top 10 through the majority of the second half of that race. Kyle has good hands in that car. He doesn't cause wrecks and he manages to avoid trouble. He is a fan favorite, he understands the racing business from top to bottom, he's a class act. Why would you want to talk trash about him? And your comments about him not being able to drive at all make zero sense. 43 drivers. That's all that race in NASCAR on a weekly basis in the Cup series. 43. And now he's ranked 26th. So he's better than 17 others. Plus the six that didn't qualify. While that may still put him in the bottom half of the stats, if you really think about it, only 43 drivers in this country qualify weekly to drive. 43. To be one of 43 to me makes any of them great. Some better than others, sure. Some classier than others, sure. But it takes 43 to make a field come the weekend. I personally am glad Kyle Petty is one of them.

I have heard interviews with Kyle where he says he is just the relief driver for the #45. That was Adam's car and when we tragically lost Adam, Kyle could have just said I've had enough and walk away from racing but he is keeping his son's spirit and memory alive by driving (I'm not sure I could have continued or returned to NHIS where Adam was killed). I have been a fan of Kyle's for as long as I can remember.

because he can.
just because he hasnt had a top 5 in 10 years doesn't mean he's not a good driver. it takes a lot of resources to run well, even at your local short track. kyle goes out an qualifies every week, which is more than we can say for some drivers who have had wins within the past few years...

Kyle is a sportsman and carring on a family tradition.
His goal was to revamp Petty Enterpise for his son,the late Adam Petty. But when he died in New Hampshire Kyle changed his plans and races in memory of Adam.
Kyle is currently looking into drivers for the Petty team to take over as a full time driver.

For the last few years, since Adam's death in 2000, he's been racing for Adam, not for himself. He's said that several times but I think now he's ready to start really running Petty Enterprises since they have a good driver in Bobby Labonte. I'm just not sure of who they will replace as a driver in the 45, maybe Jr?

I heard that he is a mess but when he came in 3rd last week i couldn't believe it my mouth hit the floor i know that was a accident i know even his dad the king had a shocked look on his face but you are right he needs to give it up and let some other younger driver get into that car that would do a whole lot better and he complains that they dont have good equipment like the other teams i wonder why he dont win and the company isn't making any money

He still has the "need for speed" and his team has enough backing to keep him racing. Trust me, if the sponsors did not want him to drive, he most likely would not. If Adam were still alive, I would think that Kyle would have retired as a driver a few years ago.

Kyle Petty is one of the classiest names in Nascar. He treats his fans like gold, much like his father does. He knows that without fans the Petty's would be nothing. He has a legacy to uphold. For his grandfather, his father, and his poor dead son. He is more of a man than all of the big shot, big money pretty boys of Nascar who marry models and party on MTV. He is old school, which is disappearing fast, and he deserves respect. Once people like Kyle Petty are gone, Nascar will forget its roots and lose all the fans it now has.
