A pap smear can detect abnormal changes on the cervix caused by HPV.
All other STDs are tested by either a physical exam of the genital area, a swab sample, a blood sample, or a urine sample. The tests depend on what STDs you are testing for.
Pap smears don't really hurt most women. They are slightly uncomfortable and there is a little pressure, but not pain. I have never had pain during a pap smear test.
Good luck!

Hi, I don't think they normally check for STDs at the GPs with a routine smear test.
When I asked my GP about STDs I was referred to another clinic at the hospital. I saw a doctor there who tested me for everything, first they have a chat to you about what your worries are, then you get up on the couch for an internal exam. I did not have stirrups - just laid back on a bed, raised my knees and opened my legs, I was covered with a sheet. As for a smear, they put a speculum into the vagina to open you up and take a couple of swabs. They do shine a bright light on your private bits! It did not hurt at all, but was a bit embarassing. It took about 10 mins. It was worth it to get the all clear.
Smear tests are not painful in my experience, the worst bit is having the speculum stretched open - I find that a weird feeling, like a strong pushing feeling, but it's not really painful.

Basically a pap smear is required every two years unless advised otherwise.
A pap smear will check for changes to the cervix and possible abnormal cells. i.e pre cancerous cells. Also human pappiloma virus will show in a pap smear test. (find information on this through a search engine).
If you require a STD test, you do need to ask the docter to check for this! STD checks are done by taking a blood test, urine test or vaginal/penile swab or all.

smear test swabs cells from the cervix to detect whether there are any differences or abnormalities in the actual cells, which if left untreated may become cancerous. when u have ur smear test (in the uk all girls get a letter advising them to have it done after their 20th birthday) u can have a test for clamydia at the same time.
its not painful just uncomfortable

Smear tests check for abnormal cells. I've heard it can be a bit uncomfortable, but its better to get it done.
If you want an STD test, then I think you'd have get that done another time. Go along to your nearest GUM clinic

They are checking for abnormal cells which can lead to cervical cancer if left untreated (althougth they can treat them!). It doesn't hurt it's just uncomfortable. You'll have to ask them if they can check for STDs. If you're having the smear test you might as well ask if they can do it all in the one visit! Don't worry and good luck:)

Hey
A smear is used to detect pre cancerous changes in the cells of the cervix (neck of the womb). If your in the UK they will not check for STI's at the same time, you can ask to be swabbed for Chlamydia, Gonnorrhoea and other infections, however HIV, Syphilis and Hepatitis will need a blood test.

they take away a few cells and send them off to check for abnormalities, if they find something abnormal they will ask you to go back and have it redone, then you will be called again in 6 months if all clear you will go back every 3 years.
im not sure about testing for stds thats usually done by a swab you could ask when your there anyway
all the best

i'm in Scotland too and have had 2 smear checks the two got here returned ok - I continuously save as much as date with them, whether you do bypass away your dignity on the door yet they're so properly worth it in the long-term. I do think of the age could desire to be diminished in England to comparable to Scotland, Jade Goody has extra cervical maximum cancers into the time-honored public eye and made women human beings greater conscious of what can ensue in case you do not decide for cervical smears. it is totally unhappy that Jade died so youthful and left 2 desirable boys at the back of without their mom yet she has finished plenty for women human beings on the topic of this each and every from time to time taboo issue, with the aid of fact as you stated each and every person thinks "it is going to never ensue to me". xxx

Don't be scared it's a bit uncomfortable; the best place to go for it would be to your local hospital's G U medicine department; they usually have drop in clinics and will test you for std's. they are very good and it's all confidential.
