I guess I should have been a little more clear. My husband is in Iraq currently and he did not finish the command sponsorship before he left. I have insurance and blah bla...however, we are stationed in Hawaii and I need to know what to do in order to go about getting our house supplies shipped down there and myself of course :D

The Command Sponsorship Program is an active program in every Command. Some are more effective than others. The way it works is your gaining command assigns you a sponsor, usually of equal rank. That person is responsible in assisting you in your move. They usually begin contacting you with a phone call and/or email. They send a "welcome aboard" package to you that contains phone numbers, lodging info, things to do, real estate guides, that sorta stuff. When you check in, they will introduce to the important persons in your command during the check in-process. Basically in a nutshell they are a contact person for you when you get to your next duty station. They can be a huge benefit, especially if you are going to a place you have never been before.

Well, what exactly do you want to know? I think for all branches the crux of getting Command Sponsorship is getting the all clear on your Exeptional Family Member screening. If someone in your family has a physical or mental disability that cannot be supported at the duty station you're PCS'ing to then that family member won't get command sponsorship. The screening needs to be done by a military doc and the form to be filled out is the DA form 7246. I think you also need the 5888.

Command sponsorship is basically for OCONUS orders. the gaining command has to agree to take full legal and fiscal responsibility for a Servicemember's family in order for them to be allowed to come to the country and stay there for the duration of the SM's orders.

Generally speaking: the orders must be for at least 3 years, every family member must pass an overseas screening to determine if there are any educational or medical concerns that cannot be dealt with OCONUS, and there must be room at the base. some bases do NOT allow family members. Much of Korea does not, for all branches. Diego Garcia and Bharain are two others. Many bases require the SM to be a certain pay grade before they will allow families. very large families( more than 3 children) will probably not get sponsorship[as there is seldom enough room.

If my memory serves me correctly, command sponsorship is basically getting your spouse/family sponsored by the military. If you are Air Force go to the MPF (military personnel flight) and ask the customer service rep about command sponsorship. Having your family command sponsored gives them medical benefits, and it also gives them life insurance and AAFES access.

PCS is a Permanent Change of Station. Basically it is where you will be assigned.
