I think that people can and should show respect for others. Even if you do not agree with things, there is no reason to be nasty about it.

That would be an over generalization of things. Wishfully, on global scale, i hope to say yes.
But seeing the YA community, this is not true. You can see alot of bashing coming from each sides of the camp.
However, they still represent the minority (i hope) as those who feel like ranting would definitely post more and incur more wrath.
Some of the more experienced people in the Y!A religious section had already quit, as they felt they could not resolve the problems plaguing the community that was caused by a few.
I personally respect the beliefs of the Xtians around me, but i gladly have a debate with them if they feel like it. They also know better not to push their beliefs down the throats of others.
So, in real life, my situation would be yes

Faith is a personal thing or at least it should be. I find most of those who flaunt their "faith" and system of beliefs, whatever it may be, in public - in the media, on the streets (parades, protests or whereever) and insult others who happen to be different just crazy and wrong. I have less respect for them than I may do for a non-believer who is smart, kind, helpful, understanding. I am personally Christian and I do have respect for non-believers if that someone has earned my respect in some way - it's simply the Christian thing to do - to understand and accept, although you may not agree. Christians full of intolerance and disrespect for others are deplorable and not at all Christian.

Dear rasputin,
i can't speak for every believer but i can say that a believer who follows what the Bible teaches ought to give respect to other people. Respect does not always mean agreeing (for example kids are supposed to respect their parents even though they don't always see eye-to-eye).
i think since we're all people- no one is better than anybody else. One thing Chrisitanity teaches is known as the golden rule: treat people how you want to be treated. If you want to be respected and treated with decency you ought to grant that same decency to others.
Off course believers and non-believers will disagree on certain issues. As a believer i can only say that beliefs are to be shared out of love- and so love allows people to make up their minds individually. When my friends reject my inivitation to receive God's love i am saddened by it and pray for them- but i try my best to understand their life experiences and beliefs and love them as friends none-the-less.
Hope that helps. Kindly,
Nickster

I don't think that we do. I am a believer. But my heart is often saddened with how I see believers treating non-believers. A self-righteous, scornful attitude toward them is anything but Christ-like. Our walk ought to reflect God-like love in everything we do...and some Christians get so haughty in their "SAVE-DED-NESS" that they forget where they come from and that it's only a thin line or single day between here and there. It's a turn-off to many non-believers. Kept me away from God and the church for years. The sooner we understand the following, the better: WE (Christians) don't get people saved. God does. We plant the seeds, follow the precepts, do what we're supposed to do, and walk the walk. God does the rest. So...ackin holier than thou....that ain't the answer!

I know a lot of believers that I have respect for though it be for other reasons. Their belief is only part of their lives. I do not personally know of a non believer that I do not respect.

It is very hard to have much respect for a person who can look you straight in the eye and tell you they believe in invisible flying creatures.

They don't, but they should. I respect people of all faiths and non-faiths. I think if you are adult enough to pick your own religion or non-religion, good for you. I respect your choice. I would like them to respect mine too.
