One of the guys said he was taking It for depression ??????? Seems strange taking Propranolol (its correct name) for depression. It's prescribed use is as a Beta adrenoceptor blocker simple as that. Intravenously its minimum dose is 10mg @1mg/ml per minute. Min. dose orally is 40 mg daily. My therapeutics lecturer once told me that if an attempt was to suddenly excercise after a prolonged period of propranolol use that you may encounter cardiac problems ranging from heart attack to mrebound tachycardia (although that only occurs if the dosage is not titrated(weaned)down gradually. To the guy who was taking/still is taking it for depression question your GP about that. Did you use it in conjunction with an anti-depressant ? Gp's dont always hit the nail on the head when it comes to drug choice and quite often the pharmacist is the one who can resolve and question a Doctors opinion. In finally answering your problem have you re-visisted your GP for a medication review ? If not I would do it right away. Good luck and take care.

The mechanism of the antihypertensive effect of propranolol has not been established. Factors that may contribute to the antihypertensive action include: (1) decreased cardiac output, (2) inhibition of renin release by the kidneys, and (3) diminution of tonic sympathetic nerve outflow from vasomotor centers in the brain. Although total peripheral resistance may increase initially, it readjusts to or below the pretreatment level with chronic use of propranolol. Effects of propranolol on plasma volume appear to be minor and somewhat variable.
In angina pectoris, propranolol generally reduces the oxygen requirement of the heart at any given level of effort by blocking the catecholamine-induced increases in the heart rate, systolic blood pressure, and the velocity and extent of myocardial contraction. Propranolol may increase oxygen requirements by increasing left ventricular fiber length, end diastolic pressure, and systolic ejection period. The net physiologic effect of beta-adrenergic blockade is usually advantageous and is manifested during exercise by delayed onset of pain and increased work capacity.

go to google, search propanolol. it will give you the reason for taking it, side effects, and adverse effects. or just go to a pharmacy and ask the pharmacist, its free, they will give you much reliable data.
generally speaking all prescribed drugs have some type of side effect. most are safe although sometimes bothersome. propanolol can control certain heart irregularities, your doctor thinks this drug help regulate yours. propanolol has been in use for decades with few deaths specifically ever recorded b/c of the drug .

I've been on it for over 10 years and it has helped my life. I no longer pace the floor with a rapid heart beat unable to rest. No side effects for me, but you can look it up on Webmd.
