I would judge from the lack of proper grammar, that many are a good deal younger than myself. What do you all imagine the mean age of the users is? I can hardly understand some of this rubbish!

Well, first of all, I did not in any way intend to offend those young people out there who actually do possess proper enough language skills, and furthermore, I apologise for my lack of coherence; age does not determine one's true grammatic prowess, nor does poor grammar indicate an unintelligent person. I merely meant to inquire as to why our language has taken a turn for the worse. People do not speak like they used to, though I will point out to the young gentleman that plenty of people use the term "rubbish", so long as you know where to look. Grammar mistakes tend to confuse a sentence, and make reading for a trained and tired mind such as my own a difficult task. It makes you sound more proper when you use the correct grammar.

Well, "sassa", I am well over 40 myself, as anybody with the ability to see could draw from my avatar. And, though amusing, I must admit, your answer is barely relevant to my question.

As the proposer of a question in etiquette i would say that whilst your grammar is exemplary your candour leaves something to be desired.

My dear chap, don't you know that you never ,ever, ask a lady her age?

As for your further points... id say that whilst the average age of users is probably no more then 20 the insights of the young should not be cast aside due to poor diction. I myself have been known to commit heinous acts; sins against grammar that haunt me to this day. But ask yourself this:

Considering the ghastly education the young of this generation receive, ought we not damn them but rather encourage them? This forum is a force for good sir. It encourages thought and opens minds. Do not be so quick to dismiss those not blessed by the grammar school education i suspect we share.

foot note: That is not to say that on occasion i have never had an overwhelming urge to run away from the monitor screaming... there are some amazing examples of evolution that seem to fly in the face of Darwin's theory.

I'm sorry if my grammar isn't up to scratch but its a hell lot better than some of the adults that use this site. I am 13 years old and if I do say so myself I have good grammar. I try my best to spell things correctly but if that isn't good enough for you perhaps I should finish my schooling before I use this site. People of all ages use this site. I am slightly offended that when you see some grammatical errors you think this site is only for teens. Adults make spelling errors and grammatical errors also. Don't relate mistakes to age. Try reading the newspaper once and a while look at how many mistakes it has. And if you can't find any maybe you should check your grammar and spelling. As I said before people of all ages use this site so by all means use it but nobody says rubbish anymore you could pick a few things up from the generation of tomorrow.

Um...just because some people use bad grammar, it doesn't mean that they are too young! It's just "internet language" if you want to think of it like that. C'mon, don't you know how it works nowadays?
By the way, I'm 16 years old....yes a great deal younger that you. Btw (that is short for "by the way") I use proper language so that people understand what I say, it doesn't have to be grammatically correct. It's not an English class we're in you know...

Judging from the fact that some use great grammar, and others do not, and in light that people of all age apply grammatical rules, and some of various ages can't spell their way out of tissue paper sack...
I good guess is the ages range from round 9 to 99.
Me, I am 101!

You are quite right - there is a lack of proper Grammas on this site. I speak as a Gramma of 2 four year old twins, and I do all the 'proper' Gramma things; take them for walks, read stories, pay for their dance class.....and I may be over 40 but still think I am 18 inside (you just wait till you get there, you'll find how true it is !!)

In what way does lack of grammer deter form somebody's wisdom? My grammer and punctuation is not so good, I admit this, but when I am reading a question, I try to concentrate less on the grammer, but try to answer the question, quite often they deserve a better answer than a complaint about thir use of the English language.
I know some very wise uneducated people and MANY foolish so called educated people.
Education in no way makes you or anyone else a better person. In my opinion actions make the person, your action in asking this question points to me what type of person you seem to be.

Footnote
Should about and exactly be used in the same sentance the way that you have.?

I suspect there is a fairly large cross-section. Don't be fooled into thinking that poor grammar is solely the preserve of the younger generation. I recently spent a number of years in management, and was constantly appalled at the lack of correct grammar, the poor spelling and scant grasp of syntax in the various communiques which would cross my desk. These were not from children, they were from 30-50 year old 'educated professionals'.
Poor English is nothing new; I left school in the seventies, and standards were as poor then as they are now.

I'm 16. I think my grammar's okay. Don't you think?
Probably why many people in this site don't have proper grammar is because they're from a non-english speaking country or maybe, typing in correct grammar and spelling takes unnecessary effort. 'Coz most people can undrstand you anyway even if you have incorrct spelings. You know, jst to save tym and efort. But I don't agree with it much.

"I would judge from the lack of proper grammar" --*Ahem* Does my grammar not seem proper? I am too young to be on this site, I admit, but h-ll, It doesn't hurt anyone. I use proper grammar, and even though I have pretty good spelling, I always use the spell check, and apologize if I make a mistake. I find it very rude that you assume that incorrect grammar=young. I am younger than 15 years of age, now, tell me, do you think I have bad grammar, or spelling?

I doubt it.

Don't judge. --Have a nice day!♥

Unfortunately, I have found that these days age has nothing to do with manners or proper grammar. While it is no excuse for the younger generations to be rude or to use improper grammar, at least they have the somewhat plausible excuse of not having the life experiences of us older people. Honestly, I have found the questions asked to be a better indicator of possible age more so than the answers.
