Are you talking about modern pirates? They don't, some modern pirates get funding from an illicit black market for petroleum. Such illicit trade of oil often gets spilled or illegally dumped or disposed. However there are also some modern pirates that steal petroleum as well. Sometimes they steal it for personal use other times they steal it for profit, or even use the oil funds to assist in the drug trade as well as purchase assault weapons. So pirates don't conserve energy they steal energy and profit from it from an illicit trade. Yo Harrr!
