we all know now that man is made up of mostly water. when the bible was written, this obviously wasn't known, and the theory that we were made of dirt would have made sense to them.

if the bible was god's word, i think he would have known that he created us with water, not dirt. doesn't this prove that the bible is just a book, and did not come from god?

christians (and anyone who wants to answer), what do you think about this?

stacy - ok, dust, not dirt, but where is the part about the water?

humans are made up of mostly water, my point is man didn't know this when the bible was written, so they said dirt. if there is a god and he created us, he would have referenced water, not dust.

I couldn't agree more. I believe that religion was invented by man in order to explained the unexplained. Look at the Ancient Egyptians - they had a god or goddess for everything that they did not fully understand. They did not understand why the sun rose and fell so they invented a god for it. All religions do this - make up supernatural causes for the things in life (and afterlife) that society does not yet understand. The fact that the Bible claims that we come from dirt is another example of one of these misunderstandings that society attempted to use religion to explain.

I am assuming that during the time in which the Bible was written when people believed that we came from dirt, they assumed this because our bodies become dirt-like after they have decayed so it is easy to see why they would have thought that since we turned into dust, that we started out the same way. While this logic is incorrect, it is easy to see how people could interpret it this way with the limited knowledge available to them at the time.

The creation of man starts from the verse before-
6) And a mist ascended from the earth and watered the entire surface of the ground.
Rashi's (A Rabbi from the 11th century) commentary on that verse: And a mist ascended Concerning the creation of man, He brought up the [waters of the] deep and watered the clouds to soak the earth, and man was created; like the baker, who puts water [into the flour] and afterwards kneads the dough. Here too, “He watered,” and afterwards, “He formed” [man]. — [from Exod. Rabbah 30:113; Pirkei d’Rabbi Eliezer, ch. 5]

And the reason for doing it this way is given by the Ramban (a near contemporary of Rashi) is that inly on the first day is anything made from nothing- after that everything is created from already existing matter. So the body of man was formed by the earth- prepared and molded by God with existing matter- and then his soul was incorporated into him- the blowing into his nostrils by God. Some more modern authorities interpret this whole scenario in light of evolution- so the body developing naturally from the earth- and discussed after the creation of the animals- is the animalistic stage of humanity- the pre-human times of natural evolution, evolving to the point where we were in the correct form God wished- as he had programmed into the world, at which point he placed the soul into the body of man- creating the being we are today and differentiating us from our animal past.

I purely prefer to understand if the atheist can certainly grant the stunning answer as they're so particular that God did not create life? - i will tutor that the biblical version is a delusion. All of genesis grow to be plagiarized from the Sumerian pills having not something to do with deities so "god coming up life" is a delusion. - As to proving the place life got here from, we settle for a organic technique because of the fact that has info. A deity magically forming life is a delusion because of the fact you have yet to tutor a deity exists and that what youi use as a info is a properly shown delusion. - There you have actually info and info and no hypothesis.

I believe we are made up of alot of chemicals also besides just water and clay.

Do you believe that you are only flesh and bone?
I believe the creator gave us a covering to carry around our souls.
This is a beautiful journey in the flesh even tho we see pain and suffering at most turns I still do not understand why people are trying to prove or disprove such a wonderful Creator.

The Bible is the most alive and true book ever written in my opinion.

I believe we are way, way more than dirt, and then there is our spiritual side too.

Peace to you

You're correct. You've completely debunked everything that I will ever believe in as a Christian.

No. You're wrong.

*edit*
People spend too much time looking for the logic, when the truth is that there are many things in life that don't fit human logic as we see it. That's all I am saying. The Bible also doesn't mention that God went through and created the man's blood, arms, ears, etc, but instead he created Adam as a man. Stop looking for the deep detail in the account so it fits complete human logic. It makes plenty of sense to me.

Not at all. In fact, it adds credibility. Evolution tells us that life began in the primordial ooze which is in essence a mixture of water and dirt. Amino acids formed when this mixture was bombarded with ultraviolet rays from the sun and electrostatic discharge from lightning. From the amino acids formed proteins and the initial forms of life. They took up residence in the seas because that was the medium that most readily supported the early forms of life.
Moses wrote the book of Genesis. With all due respect, Moses was fairly ignorant; wise, yes, but completely unlearned in the processes of chemistry, physics and biology. In both the Jewish and Christian religions, it is believed that the scriptures were written by Moses, but were dictated by God, Himself.
Since God was aware that mankind was unable at the time to understand the actual process of the creation of mankind, the book of Genesis recounts the process in a figurative sense which essentially recounts the process in a simplistic viewpoint. Undoubtedly, God knew that one day we would be able to understand evolution and the processes He actually used, and that we would also be able to see that the figurative description outlined in the Bible while not detailed, is still essentially true.

Sheeeeesh, don't ask me---MY cultural mythology says our gods breathed life, will, and goodly hue into *driftwood.*

Of course, we don't take that literally. Not sure why so many of the xtians haven't reached the same conclusion about THEIR creation myth.
