Very often there is confusion about the various methods used to harness solar energy. Energy from the sun can be categorized in two ways: (1) in the form of heat (or thermal energy), and (2) in the form of light energy. You've probably seen calculators that have Solar cells, calculators that never need batteries, and in some cases don't even have an off button. As long as you have enough light, solar cells seem to work forever. You may have seen larger solar panels on emergency road signs or call boxes, on buoys, even in parking lots to power lights.
Although these larger solar panels aren't as common as solar powered calculators, they're out there, and not that hard to spot if you know where to look. There are solar cell arrays on satellites, where they are used to power the electrical systems. Look at the resource

Super easy. PV panels commonly known as Solar Panels convert sun into electricity. The other way to collect solar energy is to harvest the heat through solar cooking devices or solar hot water heaters.

It is easy to get if you have the $$$. Your question is extremely broad. If you want to power your house with PV panels then you should be aware of this. You will never get electricity as cheaply as you can off the public power grid. But, you can with all the government subsidies available cut your installation costs in half. And you can sell excess electricity back to the city in most cases. There are major problems because of the difference in power produced with PV panels. They produce DC electricity and the power grid gives you AC. Since all your appliances run on AC you have to convert. In converting DC to AC you have a loss of around 10%. Know this, you will not be able to run power hungry air conditioners off of a PV system. Another problem with PV systems is you have to store the power produced, for use when the sun is down or periods of cloudy weather. This requires very large and heavy batteries that have their own hazards (such as gassing). All of this costs money and isn't practical for the average home owner otherwise you would see it all around.
