Asthma is an allergy and is triggered by something. The best non medication treatment for asthma is learning your triggers and avoiding them. Common triggers are smoke, dust, mold, mildew, plants, dust mites, pets and grass/weeds.

If you can not figure our your triggers, you may need to see an allergist and have allergy screening done. This may point out your triggers.

The National Asthma Prevention Program and the Expert Panel of Diagnosis and Management of Asthma both agree if you have to use a prescription inhaler such as albuterol more then two time per week, your asthma is NOT in control and you will need a prescription controller medication.

Controller medications are steroids (Asthmacort Asthmanex, Flovent, Pulmocort), Leukotriene modifier (Singulair, Aculade, Zyflo) or mast cell stabilizers (Cromolyn sodium, Intal, Tilade).

You may want to talk to your doctor about several strong controller medications and maybe Xolair shots.

If you want a proven, all-natural way to cure your asthma, without having to pay for useless medications with harmful side-effects, then this is the most important page you'll ever read.

This happens to me once in a while. There are a few things to keep in mind:

(1) Do you know what you're allergic to? Check the pollen reports on websites like weather.com. If you're not sure of your asthma triggers, it's time to talk to your doctor and figure it out. There are many possibilities and sometimes it takes some detective work.

(2) What kind of medications are you on? I have my usual inhalers, but during certain periods when it's been worse, I've had prescriptions to up the dose and try different things.

(3) Are you coming down with any colds or infections?

One more note... asthma is caused by inflammation of the bronchial passages. When something is inflammed, it is really sensitive. Once it's really sensitive, it's easy for it to get more inflammed and irritated. Some asthma medicines (like albuterol) relieve symptoms because they force the bronchial muscles to relax. This really helps you breathe, but it doesn't do anything to stop the inflammation... which gets worse and causes the asthma to come back.

That's why once in a while, asthma attacks come in waves... because the inflammation hasn't been treated. If you're not taking a medicine to help calm the inflammation, that will explain why you've been having a tougher time over a few days... even if there is no obvious trigger.

Best advice (of course) is always to go see a doctor... and share with him/her some of these ideas. I wish you well!

I practice natural/herbal/homeopathic also. In addition to what was advised homeopathically, you should avoid sugar, artifical sweetners, and gluten/wheat to reduce severity.

I used to have severe asthma and I have COMPLETELY gotten rid of it (I do not even own a rescue inhaler 'just in case' anymore). I cleared out my liver, removed toxins from my body (mercury etc) and avoid sugar (ESPECIALLY high fructose corn syrup...though no sugars are good for you).

If you MUST have sugar try maple syrup or honey. Also, try taking fenugreek to reduce your blood sugar if you are hooked on sugar (it can also reduce sugar cravings).

Try not breathing through your mouth. tape your mouth closed when you go to bed. Learn the Buteyko breathing method, then you can eat, drink, breathe whatever you want. Takes some effort and it's best to learn from a professional, but it does work.
