Lately, I've had high blood pressure, usually around 135/85 when resting and sometimes as low as 123/72. Tonight, I have BP at 159/96 and I just took 2mg Xanax, which is prescribed to me for anxiety so I'm pretty chilled out. Besides anxiety, what could be elevating my blood pressure?

I've seen the doctor and have undergone countless tests on my heart and related things and they've found nothing wrong. The docs say everthing is fine.

Kidney function immediately comes to mind for young people with high blood pressure. Your doctor should have checked this.

If you are only 21 years old you shouldn't be having hypertension. Your fluctuation in blood pressure may be related to your xanax use. Xanax is short acting so you can go into withdrawal fairly quickly. Withdrawal symptoms from benzodiazepine drugs such as xanax can include anxiety, seizures or changes in blood pressure (usually increased) and taking xanax will often lower blood pressure. You can read more on this page http://www.benzo.org.uk/manual/ if you think what I am saying might relate to you. I could be wrong I admit because I don't know you but at 21 you should not be experiencing hypertension.

Do you consume a high sodium diet? Do you smoke? Are you stressed? But most importantly, do your family members have hypertension? All of these factors play a part in hypertension. Go to your doctor and get that stabilized with meds. You will feel healthier and be healthier. Good luck!

135/85 is not really high. The American Heart Association has changed parameters to make between 130-140 and 80-85 as hypertension or "prehypertension". I don't agree with their change. However 159/96 IS high. Now that you have taken the Xanax, wait until it kicks in and take the bp again. Anxiety will raise BP. It is a result of the body's fight or flight that causes it. If it is still up, then go to the doctor.

The issue is a lot of time, healthy-looking people (skinny), aren't healthy because they don't need to take care of themselves. Like you said, you're normal weight but eat a lot of junk food and don't exercise. You don't have that gauge of how you're living by how you look on the outside. I definitely suggest that you eat more healthily and exercise. Eating whole grain foods such whole-grain bread or oatmeal will help! Take care!

You must be under some mental stress. Do deep breathing for 15 minutes twice a day on morning and evening. Gradually reduce the medication.

Cholesterol. High-fat diet. You're not too young for clogged arteries.
