It does NOT test for STDs.
It removes a sample of cervical cells to be examined under a microscope for signs of cellular changes that could lead to cervical cancer.
HPV has been linked to many (but not all) cases of cervical cancer, but the Pap Smear does not test for HPV or any other diseses. You can have HPV and many other STDs without any symptoms or abnormal pap smears. Blood tests are necessary to test for viruses (HPV, HIV, Herpes, etc.) and other STDs.

A pap smear checks for abnormal cells, plain and simple, regardless of the cause. I think the confusion here lies in that many people believe that all the things that are done while in the same area are all part of the pap smear. Your doctor may take samples of tissue or fluid in addition to the pap smear to test for std's. That's not the pap smear. I've had pap smears with std checks and pap smears without.

A pap smear tests for abnormal, pre-cancerous, and cancerous cells on your cervix. The pap smear does not test for or identify STDs. However, many doctors will perform standard STD tests along with a pap smear.

No. Pap's will determine abnormality changes in cells. If you have an STD it more than likely will give you a positive result because of the changes going on in your system. For instance, cervical and vaginal cancers are highly linked to HPV, so if you are infected with HPV you may have a positive pap (not always the case). But to determine what type of HPV you have, you have to have a different test.
You can request a blood test from your GYN to test specifically for STD's.

The Pap Smear is strictly for looking for changes in the cells of the cervix. We're talking cervical cancer. It's not a test for STD's. But be aware that the changes in cells that cause cervical cancer, come from the HPV (human papilloma virus or genital warts) and this virus is sexually transmitted.

I had a pap smear the other day and she found that I had an STD, TRICH to be exact... But I think you would need to tell your doctor that you want to be tested for STD's too.
