If I had to guess I would say that her good cholesterol (HDL) is too low.
Cholesterol can’t dissolve in the blood. It has to be transported to and from the cells by carriers called lipoproteins. Low-density lipoprotein, or LDL, is known as “bad” cholesterol. High-density lipoprotein, or HDL, is known as “good” cholesterol. These two types of lipids, along with triglycerides and Lp(a) cholesterol, make up your total cholesterol count, which can be determined through a blood test.
HDL (good) Cholesterol
About one-fourth to one-third of blood cholesterol is carried by high-density lipoprotein (HDL). HDL cholesterol is known as “good” cholesterol, because high levels of HDL seem to protect against heart attack. Low levels of HDL (less than 40 mg/dL) also increase the risk of heart disease. Medical experts think that HDL tends to carry cholesterol away from the arteries and back to the liver, where it's passed from the body. Some experts believe that that HDL removes excess cholesterol from arterial plaque, thus slowing its buildup.
LDL (Bad) Cholesterol
When too much LDL (bad) cholesterol circulates in the blood, it can slowly build up in the inner walls of the arteries that feed the heart and brain. Together with other substances, it can form plaque, a thick, hard deposit that can narrow the arteries and make them less flexible. This condition is known as atherosclerosis. If a clot forms and blocks a narrowed artery, heart attack or stroke can result.

There are three major kinds of cholesterol, High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) , Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL), and Very Low Density Lipoprotein (VLDL).
LDL Cholesterol is considered "bad cholesterol" because cholesterol deposits form in the arteries when LDL levels are high.
HDL cholesterol is a ‘good cholesterol’ as it protects against heart disease by helping remove excess cholesterol deposited in the arteries. High levels seem to be associated with low incidence of coronary heart disease.
VLDL (very low density lipoprotein) is another carrier of fat in the blood.
There are two diagnostic ratios: Total/HDL ratio should ideally be around ratio of about 3.3 to 1, and LDL/HDL ratio should be about 1.7 to 1.
Maybe the treatments have reduced the levels of HDL too much?

LDL cholesterol is referred to as 'bad' while HDL cholesterol is referred to as 'good'. I am not certain if you are saying that the 'bad' or LDL cholesterol is 3 or 3.3 mmol/L (International Units). In American units that would be 116 or 128 mg/dL. In the absence of other cardiovascular risk factors such as diabetes, hypertension, or a family history of premature cardiovascular disease in first-degree relatives that LDL value would be considered OK. If there is a problem with her HDL or 'good' cholesterol it would mean that the number is too low. If that is the case I do not know why the physician would wish to see your wife. Although we are working on medications to increase HDL at present none is available. Exercise is typically recommended to increase HDL but at most it may increase the HDL by 10% which is not enough to be clinically relevant. If you would like more specific advice please provide me with more information. Thank you. I wish your wife the best of health and may God bless. johnerussomd@jhu.edu

I am a nurses but I have never heard of good or bad cholesterol. I used to do cholesterol testing and if it was above 5 then it needed to come down to 5, if below 5 could also be a problem for some people as you can be subceptable to other problems if too low.
Its really like everything in your body - its all a balance, we are made up of every element you find in the earth, i.e. pottassium. phosphate etc all have to be a balance for us to be well.
