I'm glad you're asking questions here about how to lose weight. Although I would encourage you to ask the same questions of your doctor, it sounds like your doctor is the one who told you to lose the weight without telling you how. So I'll share with you what advice my doctor gave to me when I needed to drop a few pounds.

He said that the two best books out there on dietary change are "The South Beach Diet" and "The Omega Diet". These are not revolutionary diets, but they do directly contradict the standard AMA low-fat diet. The "South Beach Diet" contends that processed carbs are our single largest problem. When we eat foods with a high glycemic index, the sugars hit our blood stream very quickly, our body responds with insulin to pack away all that extra energy as fat, and then, after all the carbs are processed our blood sugar plunges and we feel hungry! It's a brutal cycle, but it can be broken by increasing your intake of foods with the right fats, protein, and complex carbohydrates (whole grains and other foods that take your body more time to digest). If you don't want to buy the book, do some web browsing on low-carb diets. You can gain much of the insight from doing that.

The "Omega Diet" deals largely with the question of what types of fats are good for you. They have found that eating the right fats (Omega 3's) can decrease your LDL and increase your HDL. Trans fats (partially hydrogenated anything) should be avoided. An overabundance of saturated fat can also be bad news.

Of course, there are other ways of losing weight. You can set up a point system or find some other way of calorie counting. You can practice portion control. But once you have dropped the weight, you will need to stick to that system. I find it's much easier to control my weight when I know what to eat so that I won't be hungry an hour later.

I don't know what your specific heart condition happens to be, but sodium is hard on the heart, no matter what, so it is generally a good idea to restrict your sodium intake, as well.

Good luck with your weight loss. I'm glad you're asking the right questions.
