Sorry, I guess I should have said "some" instead of "many". I know plenty of healthy looking vegetarians.

Plenty of vegetarians don't eat enough greens. Hey, when your parents raise you on meat 'n taters(no salad at dinner time--unless you count pasta salad or potato salad). You don't have much of a background to work from and it takes awile to actually like green stuff. It is totally possible to live on grains, beans, dairy, starchy vegetables and sweets for a long time before you realize somethings missing. So don't make fun. It's not nice.

Haha, nice! I was mentally sighing and ready to offer up some answer about how most people in general are pretty unhealthy, and being veg*an won't necessarily change that, and then BAM - yummy smoothie recipe.
And boy do I need it...I'm that unhealthy vegan everyone's always talking about (but I was even worse as a meat-eater; it's the junk food and bad immune system that does it.) :)

I have known many people that decided to be vegetarians and think that you simply "cut all out meat". Their diets were terrible- with low or no veggies! French fries, pizza, noodles- so I know it happens.
It is very important not just to eat plenty of greens, but to find other sources of protein- beans and rice, tofu, whole wheat pasta, dairy products (if not fully vegan) and nuts!
Check out the Seventh Day Adventist Church in your area as well- they often have Vegetarian cooking classes and allot of literature on the positives of a vegetarian diet. They also hold awesome vegetarian potlucks!

I dont think it has anything to do with greens. It has to do with protien.
While it is possible to create complete protiens from meat free sources, it's difficult/time consiming.
A meat eater just grills up a steak, and that's a perfect protien source. Whereas a vegetarian has to combine the right kind of legume with the right kind of whole grain, which is kind of tricky to figure out. Which most people just arent willing to do everyday. So as a result vegetarians, although they may have a lower fat/higher fiber/more vegetables in their diet, they are lacking in the basic building blocks.

Why would a vegetarian not eat enough greens? I'm one and I eat plenty. I look very healthy too. I like the recipe. Go to http://www.garynull.com and find some more like that!

Who told you that vegetarians are unhealthy? Come to India and see almost 50 percent are vegetarians and even others consume non vegetarian items once in a week. Probably you are comparing us with the huge physical structure of your people.

I think it's more than just not enough greens. Many vegans and vegetarians have protein deficiency if they don't consume enough protein. Much of the protein the body needs can come from various legumes and nuts. But, there are many amino acids necessary for muscle formation that are not contained in vegetables.
There has been much controversy about true vegetarians and vegans. I guess it depends on who you ask. I met a kid the other day that doesn't eat any meat or eggs or cheese. But he will eat seafood of all types. Every one has their own preference on it.
Personally, I like beef. No offense.

Um... Whether people like it or not, humans are omnivores. Not eating meat can cause a lack in important vitamins, minerals, etc if they are not making sure to take supplements for it. Kind of dumb to think that a person who lives on plants appears sickly because they aren't eating enough greens.
