Good blood sugar level control is the best way to delay or avoid all together kidney failure or dialysis. You also have to see your nephrologist to monitor your kidney function. The nephrologist will be able to refer you to dietician and pre-dialysis nurse specialist on how to look after yourself. I always advice people with kidney failure not to drink too much fluid. Limit your fluids to 1-1.5 liters per day. since your kidney is not working properly, the extra fluids you will drink will just retain in your ankles, legs and in some instance the lungs. so limit fluid intake. As much as possible have a low salt, low fat and cholesterol diet. As much as possible avoid taking NSAIDS or non-streroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. This can harm the kidneys. I am also wondering if you are taking metformin? This medication can also harm the kidneys.

FYI: PKD or polycystic kidney disease is a genetic disease. Ultimately it will lead to kidney failure and needing dialysis in the end. but for diabetes, this can be control with good blood sugar control and early referral to the nephrologist.

To avoid dialysis, do your best to control your blood sugar and see an endocrinologist AND a Nephrologist every 3 months. Drink lots and lots of water now while you can. It will help keep your kidneys flushed. Also, don't take any meds unless you have to. If you have to, find out if they are metabolized by the liver or the kidney. Drugs are metabolized by one or the other. Take the drugs that are metabolized by the liver in order to preserve your kidneys as much as possible.

hiya,
i have pkd and have to see a specialist every 3 months,my disease will eventually lead to kidney failure and dialysis, there is no medicn to stop failure. But you can do things like watching blood pressure which is accelerated by a kidney disease. If kidneys are going to fail they will.A healthy diet,no smoking or excessive drinking alchohol, drink plenty of water and also cranberry juice is great for keeping water infections at bay.
hope this helps.

If something could exchange for dialysis, don't you think it would ?

Nothing can take it's place other than a transplant.

No advice regarding such potentially serious health condition can and should be given in this forum. Unless you have access to competent alternative health options, better to stick to main stream doctor and follow his/her advice.
