Are you looking for an expectorant or a suppressant? Studies show none of them work very well or consistently, so it's a crap shoot, in either case. The most popular expectorant is guaifenesin, which seems to work almost as well as chicken soup but does have its GI side-effects. The most common suppresant is dextromethorphan, which is chemically almost the same as codeine, and has codeine's propensity for nausea. It's a prescription drug, but you might try Tessalon Perles, though many people say it doesn't work for them at all.
If you have allergies, asthma or other respiratory problems, the best thing is usually to treat the underlying problem that's causing the cough.

Is it the taste, or something in it? You can buy cough pills where the liquid is enclosed in a large capsule. I get that for my kids since they hate cough syrup.

Delsym is what everyone recommends that I've worked with---hospitals, doctor's offices, etc. That product seems to have a lot of support in the health care provider community, and it doesn't taste too nasty.
