No, coughing up blood is never common. It means that you have a burst blood vessel somewhere. If the blood is bright red, it's arterial blood, if it's dull colored, it's venal blood.

It sounds as if you might have esophageal varices (Blood vessel breaking in the throat,) or maybe an Ulcer (Blood vessels bursting in the stomache), or even vessels popping in your lungs.

My recommendation is that you make a doctor's appointment and tell your physician about it, and make it quick.

Yes it is very infectious just like Mono and a cold and a cold sore or pink eye! If you are not sure if you have strep here is a real test to find out if you have it. Gargle with very warm but not hot salt water for 5 to 6 times a day for about2 to 3 days and if you still have a sore throat then more than likely it is strep! Because strep is the only throat virus that can survive in salt water! Then you must seek a Doctors help for antibiotics!

No---blood is supposed to be in your body and not out of it (menses excepted) so call your physician right away. Do not worry, bright red blood may indicate a broken capillary or surface vessel in your throat from coughing (this is common), and may not be serious; blood in the actual mucus you cough up from deeper may indicate pneumonia. CALL the doctor and don't worry until you know what to worry about.
