The following tests are used for diagnosis:
A fasting plasma glucose test measures your blood glucose after you have gone at least 8 hours without eating. This test is used to detect diabetes or pre-diabetes.
An oral glucose tolerance test measures your blood glucose after you have gone at least 8 hours without eating and 2 hours after you drink a glucose-containing beverage. This test can be used to diagnose diabetes or pre-diabetes.
In a random plasma glucose test, your doctor checks your blood glucose without regard to when you ate your last meal. This test, along with an assessment of symptoms, is used to diagnose diabetes but not pre-diabetes.
Positive test results should be confirmed by repeating the fasting plasma glucose test or the oral glucose tolerance test on a different day.

To check yourself for diabetes you need a little machine to test the sugar in your blood. You can tell by the number whether it's high or low. When you check your blood to get the numbers; you will get two numbers, a top and a bottom.
The top number is the systolic...it should be 120 or below. It can be too low, if it's like 60 it is too low; that's when you need some orange juice with a teaspoon of sugar mixed in it.
The bottom number is the diastolic...it should be 80 or below.
There is a lot to know besides these numbers. If your sugar is too low, the numbers will be low which can be dangerous.
If your sugar is too high. the numbers are very high; that can also be dangerous.
I'm just trying to give you a little idea of what is involved. There is a lot to knowing what the numbers mean and what to do when they are up and when they are down.
I hope you don't have diabetes but please get checked by a doctor and see. Then, go from there. If you are a diabetic; you can save your own life by knowing and taking good care of it.
My son became a diabetic when he was about 25. If it wasn't for insulin he would have died a long time ago. I am not a diabetic and neither was his father.
Check on line for a chart of what I was trying to tell you about;

Because diabetes runs in your family, you are wise to be worried about getting it. Some of the symptoms include: excessive thurst, weight lose, unusual hunger, sometimes itching on parts of the body such as hands legs etc. sometimes excessive sweating and other things I can't think of at the minute. Any way make an appt with your doctor and ask him to test you. A simple blood test will give you your answer. I think you have fast for a certain amount of hours before the test. Good luck with that. Chances are you will not be diabetic , but it is good to know.

A urine test by a doc can be the first test. They won't usually do a blood test unless the urine test seems to point to diabetes, then they would test your blood to confirm it. If you go for a yearly physical (or even every 2-3 years if you are a healthy young male) they will routinely screen you for diabetes, especially if you put on your form that you have a family history of it.
Good for you for being proactive!

The blood test only takes a few minutes, your GP can do it on the spot. If in any doubt in your GP's mind he\she will send you for future tests. If you eat properly (stay away from junk food). don't drink to excess just perhaps have an odd glass, exercise. There are great diabetes cook books out there. Look up on the internet for more info and talk to your doctor.

my mum asked me this question just a week ago and the only way i can describe it is like a bad hang over without the drinking first but some people don't have any symptoms or if they do they put it down to over doing things i thought i was suffering from migraines but i will say numbness in the hands and shaking is something i still get even though my blood sugar level is controlled most of the time the worst thing is any upset and stress puts my blood sugar levels straight up even if i haven't eaten much that is the most annoying thing

well! a good question. I'm 18 year old girl and i am too suffering from diabetes-insipidus. This is heridity and diabetes insipidus is caused by heridity. The symptoms are:- excessive thirst, hunger, sleep, perspiration or high or low blood pressure, little but concerntrated urination and spinning of head.
But if you want to check then check the insulin level in your blood either by blood test, urine test or adrenaline test.
Blood test is more suitable.

The test is a simple blood test, and some times they may have you drink something and you are at the lab for hours, but some do not do this.
increased thirst
frequent urination
strong hunger
blurred vision
these are the things you need to be watching for.
