most often an enlarged heart is due to overworking the heart because of high blood pressure that has not been controlled. The muscle of the heart becomes very large from all that work, but it then reaches a point where it cannot continue to pump effectively and becomes dilated and then you have a problem. There are some surgical treatments to decrease the size of the heart, but those surgeries are very risky. Most cardiologists will try to manage the problem with medications. Eventually, the muscle simply becomes incompetent and you have congestive heart failure.

Actually it is not caused because the heart is overworked. What it seems like you are describing is dilated cardiomyopathy. I have dilated cardiomypathy, diagnoses in 1996. there are many causes for it, I will give you an extremely brief overview. It can be caused because either the heart was damaged from having too many heart attacks, it could be genetic in which case it is called familial dilated cardiomyopathy, it could be caused by a virus which damages the muscle or the sack around the heart. It can also be caused by alcohol from drinking too much. It can be caused by pregnancy (which is what I have) which rarely has a family connection. Or it could be idiopathic, meaning there is no known reason for having it. However dilated cardimyopathy can be treated with medicine and in some cases it completely reverses itself. As I said at the beginning, it has been 11 years since my diagnoses and I'm still here and manage it very well.

Could also be from a septal defect, aortic stenosis, an incompetent valve, all of which could be treated surgically. He should get some tests. A viral cardiopathy can cause it. Worst case treatment may be heart transplant.

DILATED HEART MAY BE A RESULT OF HYPER TENSION AND OR ANEMIA LOW HEMOGLOBIN And MOST OF THE TIME ALL THINGS COMBINE !IT CAN NOT COME TO NORMAL WITH ANY MEDICINE ! IT CAN BE SUPPORTED TO FUNCTION WELL WITH THE CARDIAC GLYCOSIDES LIKE DIGOXIN ETC ! dilated HEART MEANS ITS CARDIOMEGALY AND IT IS FAILING HEART ! many PEOPLE LIVES HAPPILY WITH THIS CONDITION BUT THEY HAVE SOME LIMITATIONS IN THEIR ROUTINE WORK ! they MAY GET GIDDINESS AND MAY GET BREATHLESSNESS AND MAY NOT EVEN STEP OR MAY FEEL TIRED EVEN ON DEFECATION AND URINATION ! they SHOULD RECEIVE DIURETICS AND DIGOXIN FOR LIFE TIME !with SUPPORTIVE MEDICINES ! keep control in high blood pressure and maintain blood sugar if diabetic and take iron for hemoglobin and some protein supplement always YouRsmE
