Traditionally a groom's cake was made of fruitcake. Legend has it that in olden days unmarried female wedding guests would place a piece of fruit cake in a box under their pillow so they would dream about the man they would marry.

Anyway, nowadays grooms cakes made of fruitcake have fallen out of favor. Current tradition is to make it out of the groom's favorite type of cake.

I've also seen them made with a variety of themes that reflect the groom's hobbies, occupation, etc.

You can try making a fish shaped cake and decorating the fish in the colors of the wedding theme. Maybe you could even use a Finding Nemo cake pan. You can then adapt the icing colors to match the wedding colors.

Or you could try making two fish designs on top of a more traditionally shaped cake. You can then make a wedding veil of icing on one fish and perhaps a bow tie on the other.

For more info on groom's cakes as well as all kinds of cakes, check out http://www.cakechannel.com. They even have pictures of groom's cakes on the site. My favorite is shaped like a golf bag.

Many ways. I learned to decorate cakes for fun years ago.
If, you doing a tiered cake you could try a Barbie Doll sunk into the cake (Naked of course) about waist/breast high and Ken in a boat on top pulling her from the water with a fishing pole. Make the icing blue with white wave caps and add Gummy Fish in a few places.
Any type dolls would work, but, I just give the concept.

I went to a wedding and the groom's cake was just a bunch of Krispy Kreme donuts stacked up in wedding cake form. It was really cool.

What kind of fisherman is he. Is he a commercial fisherman? If he's a scalloper, decorate the cake with scallop shell designs. That would be beautiful.

Check out the wilton website. That should help...

An idea off of the top of my head... You can do one cake that looks like a fish with a hook in its mouth and one oval cake that you can use as a thought bubble with a cute phrase in it like 'Looks like I'm not the only one that got caught...'
