It depends on the type of insulin they took. Some are short acting insulins and others are long acting. If it is a short acting insulin it should be given no sooner than 15 minutes before a meal.

Long acting insulin stays in your body over time and sometimes requires a snack later. Short acting insulin requires food fairly immediately.
