Wait. Unless you live in CA or NJ or have some really great rebate program that I don't know about. The first thing you should do is make sure you have the best insulation you can get, have replaced all of your lightbulbs with CFLs and your appliances with Energy Star efficient models. High silicon prices currently put a floor under the price per killowatt hour of solar energy. This situation will NOT be resolved anytime soon, and a few very promising startups should be making non-silicon PV systems by 2010 (check out Heliovolt, Nanosolar and Miasole). This means that every extra KwH it takes to power your home costs you a bundle. The other investments I mentioned will cut your energy use by a wide margin, esp the appliances and lightbulbs because models that provide the same level of service while using less energy generate less waste heat, which will lower the load on your HVAC system. Only consider solar after doing everything else first, and I recommend getting it professionally installed.

There are a myriad of options from the Library to local community education centers as well as the net. It really depends on the resources where you live. BP solar many also be a reliable source for the actual panels as well as installation advice. http://www.bp.com/modularhome.do?categoryId=4260&contentId=7004852
