The sun, for all practical purposes, is an endless source of energy but cold climates, cold seasons and cloudy weather impact our ability to access it. We need to find a combination of energy sources and consistently rely on natural sources, such as wind and even controversial hydroelectric to meet our planet's needs.

We also need to re-engineer our products that require energy. We can design far more efficiently and still be able to cool and heat our homes, schools and businesses. The Green Star program is just scratching the surface when it comes to energy efficient appliances, etc.

I rate biomass third because it creates pollution while solar and wind do not.

By the time we have ran out of oil, Im sure we might have successfuly shifted to Solar Cells or Hydrogen based Engines- because by that time Solar Research would bring the prices of solar cells & batteries down and hydrogen based engines shall be more stable.

By that time - Wind Energy Generators shall be common household power appliances.

By that time - all of us could grow Bio-diesel plants like Jatropha in our lawns as Hedges

I think as an environmentalist, I can choose any or all of the three.

Why not pretend all the oil already has run out

and incorporate Solar (line dry your clothing)

as well as wind

use a cistern to collect water for gardening (at least in AL we are in a draught level 2)

allow the growth of hemp. Use Grass based Biofuel (not corn based)

ditch the TV and the dishwasher and the hair dryer... pretend you are living in pioneer days.. plan your house according to the fall & rise of the sun... wear more warmer clothing in the winter

go back to natural cleaning products that don't tax our water supply

I say biomass. That is basically what oil is, just really old biomass. But we would have to use all three, and more. Personally, I hope we can get nuclear fusion working. That would be a really good solution to all our energy problems.

I would choose a combination of Geo-thermo, solar and wind for energy. All three are environmentally sound alternatives.
