I went to e.r. for what I thought was bad back pain, tests were run and sugar was 600. I had no idea I was diabetic. Other tests were run and my hemoglobin test was 15. My Dr. said he has never seen this in his career, which of course meant nothing to me. It still doesn't. I spent one day in i.c.u. and four days in step down for this.My back pain was a bad gall bladder..This all happened April 12th.I am doing pretty well controlling things by diet and start classes in the next two weeks. My liver enzymes were high also, so they took a liver biopsy when they did gall bladder surgery. I don't have those #s.

It's a very good thing that you caught this. Now you can begin the treatment and lifestyle changes that are necessary for good diabetes control.

As for this doctor's comment...I've heard a lot worse. This doctor might not have been to experienced in dealing with diabetics...he might have been a new doctor. Don't give it too much weight. Although it might have been uncalled for, it was not exactly improper.

I remember one time when I had to see my doctor for a severe sunburn. When I pulled up my shirt to show him the burn, he literally whistled through his teeth and told me it was the worst sunburn he had ever seen.

Sometimes, a healthcare professional doesn't think before they speak. I've done that too and it has gotten me in trouble.

Welcome to the world of diabetes. The good thing is that there are a lot of other diabetics on here who can give advice, tips and pointers...and encouragement. I advise you to see the advise of a certified diabetes educator. They can help you with diet, exercise and all of the lifestyle changes you will need to make. Good luck.

actually gall bladder pain is often in the upper back, or behind the right shoulder. Your doc did not do a good job of explaining what's going on with your health. A sugar of 600 is very high but an E.R. with experience would have seen that before. If you go back for a Dr visit ask him to explain.

Back pain is indeed wierd for gallbladder disease, but there must have been something that made him do the blood work. I'd say it was a good pick-up on his part, or maybe he was thinking kidney problems and lucked into the diagnoses, but in either case, it worked out, so all's well that ends well.
