Tankless water heaters are an awesome idea. The tank heaters are constantly heating up an entire tank of water, all day and all night, in case you ever need hot water. The idea is similar to starting your car and let it run all day and all night in case you ever need to go somewhere.

The tankless water heater heats up the water on demand as you need it, and shuts itself off when you're not using it.

The biggest distributor of these in North America is Rinnai. Check out their web site that I've cited for you below:

We live in Missouri but when we built our new house about 4 years ago, we put in a continuous hot water heater which means that it heats the water on demand when you turn the water on, it is heated as it goes through the coils. We absolutely hate it. 2 people can't be using the hot water at the same time, then no one gets hot water. Also we are getting ready to get our 5th one as it keeps going out and of course this time, it is no longer under warranty.
