CPR is done only is the person's heart has stopped. Otherwise you may add to the pain by breaking ribs and the breastbone.
Chewing an aspirin, or pulverizing it and putting it under the tongue.
They do need to sit or lie down quietly, and try to relax. Loud sounds around them should be turned off to help relax. If any thing is irritating them, remove it or turn it off.
If possible to breathe deeply and slowly, that can help. Stay calm around them, as it will reduce anxiety and tension around the heart.
When calling 911, do not use a cell phone if at all possible. Cell phone 911 calls are not answered locally. In a state like Texas or California, you may get a highway patrol office a 1000 miles away at first. If it is the only choice, use a cell phone.

Straight up call 911**and please know where you are** - not all city's / states have medically trained personal on the other side of the line-please just stay as calm as possible and listen to what the EMS operator is telling you to do... none the less if you want the fastest first aid an EMS unit is just that -- a heart attack does not necessarily mean your dead so CPR will do nothing, neither will an AED -- those are best for a deceased person, that's not to say a heart attack won't kill you, it can. What you see on TV are just exaggerated events. There are many people that have mild heart attacks and never know.

First there are a few things that I disagree with. 1-Courious is describing the symptoms of a stroke, not a heart attack. 2-If you are NOT a trained medical professional or trained in CPR, you need to call 911 first. This is because every second they go without help counts. 3-yes, you can hurt someone by doing CPR wrong. you can break a bone, cause bruising, etc. However, if you do nothing they could die. If you break a rib and save their life, I'm sure they won't mind the broken rib. They can't sue you (if it was a stranger for instance) for doing CPR wrong. You are protected under the Good Samaritan law. This states that anyone trying to help in an emergency situation cannot be sued for harm inflicted during CPR or First aid. So, it's best to call 911 FIRST and then start CPR.

First Aid
1. Have the person sit down, rest, and try to keep calm.
2. Loosen any tight clothing.
3. Ask if the person takes any chest pain medication for aknown heart condition.
4. Help the person take the medication (usually nitroglycerin, which is placed under the tongue).
5. If the pain does not go away promptly with rest or within 3 minutes of taking nitroglycerin, call for emergency medical help.
6. If the person is unconscious and unresponsive, call 911 (or your local emergency number), then begin CPR.
7. If an infant or child is unconscious and unresponsive, perform 1 minute of CPR, then call 911.
DO NOT
* DO NOT leave the person alone except to call for help, if necessary.
* DO NOT allow the person to deny the symptoms and convince you not to call for emergency help.
* DO NOT wait to see if the symptoms go away.
* DO NOT give the person anything by mouth unless aheart medication (such as nitroglycerin) has been prescribed.

call 911 and bring an AED!
if they have the symptoms, you need to call an ambulance immediately. aspirin won't do a damn thing. Also, don't try to drive them to the hospital or drive yourself if you are having the heart attack. get them to sit down in the meantime and relax, stay calm. take any heart medications they may need to take. if they lose consciousness, perform CPR--IF you know how. if you do it improperly, you might cause more damage. You should consider getting CPR certification. You can do an online class and it only costs 15-20 bucks.

Call 911! Ask 911 operator what would be the best thing to do. And, only if previously prescribed by your doctor, take aspirin or nitroglycerin.
Then, begin CPR until the paramedics arrive.

Give both CPR and aspirin (if you KNOW the person does not have an aspirin allergy)... But, even better would be a home AED shock machine, which are available now... Do you have one at home?

Aspirin ain't gonna work if the patient has no heart beat or isn't breathing...make sense? CPR 1st, stablize the patient 2nd, call for help third...and THEN, maybe an aspirin tablet
