Donate or recycle your gadgets.
Old electronics clog landfills. About 130 million mobile phones are retired every year, resulting in more than 65,000 tons of waste, including potentially hazardous materials such as lead and mercury.

Only 30% of redundant mobile phones will be eventually recycled with the rest abandonned in drawers or sent to landfill. In the UK alone it is estimated there is in excess of 80m outdated phones gathering dust with an annual increase of 10m.
Waste from mobile phones has become a major environmental issue, in particular some of the many substances used to manufacture mobiles contain the deadliest toxins known to man, these include Arsenic, Mercury, Cadmium, Palladium, Lead and Beryllium. It therefore is essential that mobile phones are recycles to ensure disposal of any harmful toxins in a controlled manner.
For details of companies and charities collecting mobile phones, including a link to a database of over 40 000 drop off loacations in the US

Televisions and monitors should also be recycled as they too can contain some of the harmful toxins listed above. Your local authority should accept these for recycling at their household recycling centre.

Look on the internet for recycling companies in yur area within a 100 mile radius.
I printed out 2 different companies that we take our recyclebles to once to twice a year, because our recycling company doesn't take certain items. I am bound & determined to recycle everything as possible.
You could also get on freecycle.org & list them. There are hobbiests out there that love to work on electronics. Freecycle is all about keeping items out of the landfill & giving the stuff away for free. Check it out.

Hi. I think mobile phone stores and/or post offices take old phones and recycle them somewhere. Some of the charity shops might take the tv and use for parts. I do know some of them have tradespeople who fix up old ones. Worth checking out at least. Anyway just a thought. Cheers. dragonlady845.

You shouldn't put them in the city dump anyways, they'll leech some nasty chemicals, because the circuit boards are covered in chemicals. I don't remember the exact compounds but I do know you're not supposed to because it creates a type of toxic gas as it breaks down. You need to take it to your local electronics disposal.
But yes, some places have programs that repair old computers and monitors and so on, then put them in schools, so they go to help kids that need it.

You can donate all cellphones at your local electronics store. I dropped off a lot of cell phones at Circuit City. Your local zoo is also taking taking cellphone so that they can be recycled as well. TV and radios can be donated to orphanges, halfway homes. You can donate them to your local churches as well.
