Many species of animal life can be found in the rain forest. In fact, scientists estimate that more than half of all the world's animal species live in tropical rain forests.

There are common characteristics found among mammals and birds (and reptiles and amphibians, too). They include adaptations to a life in the trees, such as the prehensile tails of New World monkeys. Other characteristics are bright colors and sharp patterns, loud vocalizations, and diets heavy on fruits.

Insects make up the largest single group of animals that live in tropical forests. They include brightly colored butterflies, mosquitoes, camouflaged stick insects, and huge colonies of ants.

As you asked, here are some kinds of animals that live in the rain forest:

1. Africa Forest Elephant
2. Bengal Tiger
3. Chimpanzee
4. Common Palm Civet or Musang
5. Dawn Bat
6. Golden Lion Tamarin
7. Harpy Eagle
8. Jambu Fruit Dove
9. King Cobra
10. Kinkajou
11. Linn's Sloth
12. Orangutan
13. Proboscis Monkey
14. Red-shanked Douc Langur
15. Silvery Gibbon
16. Slender Loris
17. Sumatran Rhinoceros
18. Toco Toucan
19. Vampire Bat
20. Wagler's Pit Viper

About your question of what is causing the deforestation of the rainforests, well the answer is simple: rainforests are being destroyed because the value of rainforest land is perceived as only the value of its timber by short-sighted governments, multi-national logging companies, and land owners.

What can you do about it?: join campaigns against rainforest deforestation, buy only recycled paper, instead of harwood floor or wood furniture buy bamboo floors and furniture. Promote recycling in your house and in your community...

There are thousands of species of animals, plants and insects in the rainforest and scientists know they haven't cataloged all of them. They're always finding new kinds of life they didn't know existed there. The sad part is that so many species are being lost. There are so many plants that native peoples use for medicines that haven't been studied, and the hope for finding cures for some serious diseases from these plants is high, but they're being destroyed faster than they can be studied.

Deforestation is being caused by changes in temperature; acid rain; and the biggest destroyer of all is man and the "slash and burn" style of land clearing for planting crops. There is also a tremendous need for lumber around the world, and if there's money to be made, greed wins out over common sense.

You need an encyclopedia to list the rain forest animals the diversity in the rain forest is tremendous!

We are causing deforestation by eating to much beef. South American Cow farmers are not taught how to care for the environment. They burn down big areas to make pasture for the cows. When that land is used up they burn down more, instead of trying to restore what they already have.

Different ecologist have been trying to teach the locals that they can actually make a living by preserving the rain forest. One method is to plant pistachios, which are worth more per pound then beef, and are a renewable resource that can be harvested without killing any trees.

I don't know how much the species vary from each rainforest, but some from the Amazon are ~ jaguars, frogs, river dolphin, manatee, lots of insects, monkeys, to name a few.

Causes of deforestation are logging, clear-cutting for factories and cattle ranches.
