As a member of the clergy, I've found many ways to help. We are planning our new Temple. That Temple will soon join the "Adopt-a-Road" program. We will also have solar panels for both electricity and hot water. The hot water will used in the radiant floor heating system. We also celebrate Earth Day. We donate to Habitat for Humanity, the Benson Institute, World Wildlife Fund, and the ASPCA. We educate each other, newcomers and our children on environmental issues and how one person/family can make a difference. We recycle, reduce and reuse as much as possible. We also research new methods.

Raised 3 wonderful responsible nice children that are all good citizens. Neutered pets, raised my own food as in beef, lamb, pork, chicken and rabbits. Had a huge garden and canned all our veggies, watered with irrigation, recycled, taught my children how to use coupons by buying a sorter and having them cut out the coupons for the things we used--at the end of the month they got half of what I saved and kept track of for an allowance--they also got the cash from cans bottles paper etc. My uncle had orchards and brought me fruit to can and I raised my own grapes and berries for juice and munching. I use very little power--all electric apt and my bill is less than 20 dollars a month. No dishwasher ( a real cash cow and water hog) and have all but eliminated using an oven by learning to cut down usage by using a microwave for 1/4 of the time. I use the good bulbs (old ones forget the names) little curly ones!! I make a trip out in the car productive, all my stops on one path and back home. I use few packaged foods and cook my own. I have tutored adults with learning problems, I have held the hand of many a dying person working thru Hospice--it makes you feel very humble to know you will lose the person that chooses to tell you their lifes story in a short time. Wonderful people, world travelers, a WWII fighter pilot, a risque little stinker, a 93 year old cracker likely to punch you. What a great life. Live it to the best that only you can be.

First, read my profile.
Second, go to Affluenza.org and read it thoroughly. I send people there all the time and it helps with a wide range of problems in the world, including saving money.
Other things I do and work with, often teach about: recycling, reducing consumerism and being brainwashed by advertising, reforestation, organic gardening, energy retrofits, several pending patents on energy saving technologies, I established an environmental education non-profit organization, composting, fighting against the foolishness of lawn mowing ordinances, buying locally, avoiding imports from countries with harmful practices such as India and China, etc. I could fill several screens with all the topics I work with in relation to this issue.
I campaign for human rights and social justice on a daily basis.
I practice and teach herbalism and holistic medicine.
I also work in research on sustainable energy production and have a process in the works that will produce 1/3 of the energy used in the US from garbage in a way that does not pollute and makes clean fertilizer. I am currently trying to find investors to build our first prototype facility.
I also work with the team to develop the world first themed entertainment facility which is geared towards using the setting of Myth and Legend as an educational and inspirational tool to motivate people to see the value of eco friendly and socially responsible ways of living that were part of everyday human life before the rise of the industrial age and humans becoming slaves to wages so they can buy things they do not need.
The facility will also reclaim several tens of thousands of acres of former strip mined land and turn it into organic farms and forests while managing the local watershed in more sustainable ways that increase habitat and clean water.
We have already recruited a number of volunteers from people here on YA to help with the effort.
The more people join us the more it helps us all.

I try to make "random acts of kindness" a way of life. I was a hospice nurse and did my best to try to help my patients and families. I try to treat people with respect and kindness. I recycle. I volunteer. I car-pool whenever possible to save fuel and ease traffic problems. I don't wear leather, fur or any cosmetics that have been tested on animals. I don't litter. When I go to the beach or a park, I try to leave it a little cleaner than when I got there. Little things can have a bit impact.

I replaced all my bulbs with cfl bulbs. 670watts down to 56watts
I quit making it so chilly at night with my AC.
I added more shade around my windows,
I sealed my doors better than what they were.
When yahoo sends me my cfl bulbs, I'm giving them to my friends.
I have drastically cut down on driving, mostly in protest of rising gas prices.
I am planning to buy a bike in the summer.
I started washing all my dishes by hand.
I have participated here in the enviroment section. it helps me learn and teach others.
after thinking about this answer I guess the BEST thing I did about helping the world was to LEARN about how I impact the world.

I have replaced all electrical appliances with energy saving devices. I believe in recycling and I despair with the number of trees that are being cut down to make paper which comes in the form of catalogs, magazines, announcements etc. which I throw out without reading. It drives me nuts. I will do my part and hope that all Americans wake up and do theirs.
