Miracles can and do happen. Last year a man who had been in a coma for 19 years, came out of it. He had been in an auto accident.
Don't ever give up hope.

Very slim.
If a CVA was serious to put someone in a coma for a year, the chances of that person regaining consciousness and cognitive ability is next to nothing.
There are variables. It HAS happened. Did the stroke cause oxygen deprivation? Are brain waves still evident? Can the person breathe on their own? Does the person respond to stimuli?
Miracles can happen. However, to base all your hopes on one is not a good idea. Even if such a person did awake from such a long term coma, the chances of them regaining funtion are very low, if not impossible.
I'm sorry to sound so negative but that is the reality.

Very, very low, basically zero. You hear stories sometimes about things like that happening, but I've never seen it, nor have any of the doctors I've worked with.
To give you any sort of prognosis I would have to know a bit more about the stroke (where it was, how large, whether it was ischemic or hemorrhagic) but if this person has really been in a coma for a year, I would strongly consider withdrawal of care (unless the patient would have wanted to be kept "alive" in this way) - the chances of recovery are essentially zero.
