Would only get one from a "reputable" breeder, one that gurantees the stock.
This was they will not be as likely to have hip or other problems.

Dear Rachel:

The first three months in a dog's life are extremely important in forming its character and physical health. During the first ninety days of its life, a puppy will learn vital social skills by living in a family environment from its mother and its brothers and sisters. These social skills will be applied by the puppy later on developing a strong and healthy relationship with its "owner". It is also important that its mother has not become a "puppy mill" with continuous births to satisfy the financial interests of the breeder.

Having said that, you understand that it is very important to know the environment in which the puppy was brought up in and how long it satyed in that environment before it was separated from its original physical family. Unfortunately, the presence of a pedigree certificate is not enough of an assurance that these important conditions in the early life of a puppy existed.

I always prefer to get a puppy from a breeder. I visit the breeder before any puppies are available to find out about how he/she treats her dogs, what is the environment that the dogs live in and how often they give birth. When a birth takes place, I visit again to see how the puppies are treated and where they live (inside a house or in a kennel). Puppies are like a sponge as they absorbe everyrthing positive or negative which exists in their environment.

Unfortynately, when you get a puppy from a pet store, you do not have the luxury of being able to do any of the things I mentioned above. There are good and reputable pet stores out there that purchase their puppies from reputable breeders but there are also those which do not. I will always prefer to get a puppy from a breeder than from a pet store for the reasons that I mentioned above.

I hope that this is of assistance. Thank you for asking. Just by asking this question, you have demonstrated that you will be a good and responsible friend to any puppy from wherever it comes to you.

Warmest regards,

Konstantinos

I would say a reputable breeder has healthier dogs-pet shops have a tendency to buy from puppy mills. However, some breeders are only one step away from puppy mills. You should be able to visit their facility, meet the parents and see that they are healthy and well-cared for. The dogs should also be social and friendly. Good breeders usually offer a much better health warranty as well.

Dog's from a good breeder are MUCH healthier than any dog from a pet store. Ones from a backyard breeder tend to be as bad or even worse.

Be careful how you pick your breeder and you will have a lot less problems if any health wise.

Your odds of a healthy dog are MUCH higher with a reputable breeder. The pet stores health guarentees are heavly hedged based on the fact that many major problems such as hip displasia don't show in the first month - the breeder actually tests the parents so he KNOWS they are healthy.
MOST reputable breeders dog NOT have a license USDA licenses only PUPPY MILLS so if they have a USDA license posted, I'd walk away. The reputable breeder can't show you a license he can show you heath test certificates, AKC title certificates, show ribbons, win pictures, the actual mother, the actual puppy pen.......

It all depends on the Breeder. Ask to check your Breeders credentials or License. Any good breeder will post there license. Most of the dogs you see at the pet stores come from licensed breeders. Go to the kennel and check out the living conditions of the dogs. Ask to see the blood line of the dog in question. Most breeders will guarantee the dogs health for a certain period. Check to see if the dog has had it's shot record kept up to date. Ask the breeder for references they may have from other customers.

At least from a breeder you can visit the place where the puppy came from, the condition, the records, the people. At a pet store you have no idea who you are dealing with. Where the puppy come from.... how the puppy was raised. So to answer your question..Yes it is..as long as you know what to look for when purchasing a puppy.

Probably healthier - if you have a registered breeder in good standing with the AKC and SPCA or complimenting associations depending on the country. The problem with most pet stores (not all) is where these puppies come from - you really don't know. With a qualified and registered breeder you can usually visit their facilities and get references. you will probably save money as well.

Dogs from RESPONSIBLE breeders are healthier then dogs from pet stores. Dogs that come from pet stores are often not healthy or have genetic issues. These dogs come from mills/BYB in otherwords irresponsible breeders.

well if you get one from a reputable breeder then they will be far healthier than from a pet store . Most pet stores sell puppy mill puppy which are not bred well therefore more illness can occur. I would definately stick to a reputable breeder .
