and what if their hometowns are too far away( in other states?)

Either their friend/family picks them up, or they get a ride to the bus terminal along with $40 to catch the bus back to their hometown. They also have the option of just walking out the door.

Well every state probably has a different method, but at least some of them give newly released prisoners a small amount of cash to buy bus tickets. Also there are special programs like half way houses for those who don't have a home to go back to.

Bus service outside the prison, then they need to change once it gets to a town or city

I know one person who wasn't picked up by the relatives and got bus fare from the prison
