DW is a good driver but certainly not the best. Here is a history lesson for you.

Richard Petty- 200 wins 7 championships
David Pearson-105wins 3 championships
Darrell Waltrip- 84wins 3 championships
Bobby Allison- 84wins 1 championship
Cale Yarborough-83 wns 3 champinonship
Jeff Gordon*-78 wins 4 championships
Dale Earnhardt-76 wins 7 chamionships
*-still active driver

HERE IS MY TOP 5
Richard Petty
David Pearson
Dale Earnhardt
Darrell Waltrip
Jeff Gordon

Richard Petty will always be number 1. Jeff Gordon will Eventually be Number 2 because he is still racing. Dale Sr, is number 3 because of 7 championships and he would have more wins if he hadn't died. David Pearson is the only other driver to have over 100 wins so he is two for another year or two. Darrell Waltrip was an awesome driver to watch but just falls short in "The Greastest Driver" catagory. A true NASCAR fan goes by the facts. Enjoy the race.

I think people like Richard Petty, David Pearson, Cale Yarborough Earnhardt Sr, and several others might take exception to that. Waltrip won some races in his day. Sure. Back then... about anyone around driving for Junior Johnson would have been winning.
I've been a stock car racing fan since before Nascar ever came along, and I AM a true fan of the sport. I'm old enough to have watched Ralph Earnhardt race at Hickory, NC in 1961... probably long before you were born, and I'm far from being an idiot. While I may not be the leading authority on Nascar, I do know quite a lot about it. And... I'm sure not biased enough to make a statement like you just did.

I strongly believe that Gordon is the best driver ever. Don't get me wrong, Petty, Earnhardt, and Waltrip were all great drivers. But they did not race in a time when all the competition was equal. And Petty only has so many wins because they used to race a lot more than 36 races a year. Earnhardt was one of the first to start using chassis adjustments such as track bar and sway bar. And Waltrip, well he was a good driver but he had some help with the buckshot that would weight down the car but would slowly pour out of the car making it lighter, giving him more horsepower helping him cross the finish line first. In today's racing, the cars are so equal that there are a lot more racers who can actually compete for a win. And to beat them close to 80 times in this type of competitve environment makes him the best driver in my eyes. But all the drivers mentioned here are and were great drivers.

Whatever criteria you are using to determine the greatest driver EVER is flawed and would make YOU to appear to be the idiot. One of the major stats you need to look at is winning percentage. David Pearson has the 3rd best alltime winning percentage (18.07%) and there are many others ahead of DW in that category (Sr.-11.24%, Petty-16.68%, Gordon-16.12%, Jimmie Johnson-13.92% to name a few). Waltrip was ONE of the best ever (20th best winning percentage of 10.43%), somewhere in the top 5 to 10 all time. Of course there are other factors to consider but here is MY top 5.
1) David Pearson (so dominant and a clean racer)
2) Dale Earnhardt Sr. (started late, had to work his way up)
3) Jeff Gordon (could end up #1 or #2)
4) Richard Petty (more races, less competition, cheated)
5) Darrell Waltrip (3 championships, a great driver)
And we'll see about Jimmie Johnson, he could easily end up top 5 and bump Waltrip off this list someday.

he is clearly one of the best but OBVIOUSLY not the best by no means.... lots of wins , 3 championships and a good speaking voice doesnt earn that title... petty--- simply because if anyone surpasses 200 wins i will personally kiss your @ss-- aint gonna happen... also if you have ever tried to get his autograph--- he is a major prick-- unless you pay the $500 to sit in the same room as him with only 50 seats available (sold out already- perhaps to FOX network brass because they along with TOYOTA have been bluffed by the waltrip brothers) i personally saw the real testament of a man in 1998 when jeff gordon was leaving nascar cafe.. as the limo was driving off a boy in a wheelchair caught his attention, he made the driver back up, he got out and said " i"m already late for my flight but i hope everyone under stands this boy is the reason i stopped, i cant leave this but this one has to be the last one and its only fitting its this guy , sorry and i wish i could give everyone a few minutes but i simply cant ... this one i dont even question , its just the right thing to do..." thats class waltrip has yet to find.. gordon can still smile and seem impervious to thousands of hecklers and still make time to do the right thing... seems like 2000 years ago there was another guy with this problem and no that wasnt waltrips rookie year... not saying he is like christ by no means but just look at the circumstances.....

If you DO believe Darrell is the greatest driver ever then you are not only an idiot but not a true NASCAR fan. LOL.

Waaaay back in the day, he was good, providing you could stand his remedial drivel and constant whining. I agree with whoever stated he needed to retire 5 years before the fact.

Dump the irritating boogity thing, him and that jock itch Larry with the tighten those belts thing, urgh!! Nowadays, he is grating on my nerves with his shameless corporate whOre plugs for Toyota and his pathetic brother who should have at least taken a Dodge ride before biting off more than he could chew.

Kind of harsh, aren't you? Might want to get your facts straight. Actually Darrell Waltrip was under Cale Yarborough, Dale Earnhardt, and Richard Petty. Actually, Jeff Gordon has more wins now.

I'm not denying that he was a good driver, but there are others who won more races and championships.

And I've been a NASCAR fan before you were probably born!

I personally think that he's more of a top 10 than a top 5 driver. To say that if you dont believe that your an idiot and not a true NA$CAR fan is taking this to an extreme. But your entitled to your opinion even if it sucks.
TOP 10 (this is my opinion only)
Richard Petty/Dale Earnhardt arguably 1 and 2
3. Cale
4. David Pearson
5. Jeff Gordon
6. Davey Allison (We'll never know what he could have accomplished, I personally dont think Dale Earnhardt would have 7 cups and Gordon wouldn't have 4)
7. DW
8. Benny Parsons
9. Bobby Allison
10. Rusty Wallace

Of course Dick Trickle was close to a top 10 driver and would've easily been in my top 10 if he had won a race............................. dont get your panties in a bunch people, I'm just kidding.

I have been a fan of Darrell Waltrip since the 60's when he run the Late Model Sportsman series.
He is one of the top 5 drivers in the history of the sport.
