An example of biblical excommunication is found in 1 Corinthians 5. There, Paul tells the church to cast out a man who is living immorally and who is having a negative effect on the church. The people are winking at his immorality instead of taking a stand against sin. For this reason, the man needed to be removed.
He also needed to be removed so he could see that his sin was bad. Paul said that by removing man, Satan could get to work on him (5:5).
Excommunication means that a brother or sister has been denied participation into the normal local community of believers: Bible studies, Sunday or Saturday meetings, potlucks, evangelism, and so on. However, it is not for ever. In 2 Corinthians 2:6-8, we find that the man cast out repented, so the church should take him back in.

Excommunication is a religious censure used to deprive or suspend membership in a religious community. The word literally means out of communion, or no longer in communion. In some churches, excommunication includes spiritual condemnation of the member or group. Censures and sanctions sometimes follow excommunication; these include banishment, shunning, and shaming, depending on the group's religion or religious community.

Denial of service at High Mass. Even though nobody's taking names at Mass, once you are thrown overboard by the pope, you are not supposed to partake of the bread representing the body of Christ, there isn't hardly anything which reverses the Excommunication and this makes the Eurcharist routine not worth your participation.

Excommunication means you have been removed from the church. Most typically this is a Catholic thing. You could also liken to being fired from your job. You were excommunicated from your place of work.

excommunication is when you are "cast out" from a certain society or group. The Amish (or Mormons if you prefer) "excommunicate" people from their society for breaking certain rules. When you are excommunicated, you more or less cease to exist to the group who excommunicated you. They don't see you, hear you when you talk, etc.

Basically you got in trouble with the church for some reason and they kick you out. Mormons actually have half way houses for follower to work their way back in.
