Well, in *my* society, very little... Beliefs hardly ever crop up in conversation - whether work, the pub, sports or anywhere. Over the past, say, 20 years, I can remember *once* - at my son's Waldorf School, and they're more than a tad "different" (Anthroposophists.)

If you are speaking of spiritual beliefs...I think that they have played a very big role. The Ten Commandments of the Jewish and/or Christian faiths for example are the basis for many of our laws so have more or less set the moral compass of most civilized countries. Even non believers often follow these moral values because they were taught that these things were "the right thing to do" etc. Most spiritual beliefs have similar codes of conduct also so even in non civilized parts of the world, the people's behavior is based and or judged on those particular values.

Daniel 2:44
“And in the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be brought to ruin. And the kingdom itself will not be passed on to any other people. It will crush and put an end to all these kingdoms, and it itself will stand to times indefinite;
God's kingdom is being set up now via his only begotton son Jesus Christ. It will be at Armageddon when God will then exhalt it over all the other kingdoms of the earth.
2 Peter 3:9
Jehovah is not slow respecting his promise, as some people consider slowness, but he is patient with you because he does not desire any to be destroyed but desires all to attain to repentance.

Belief based on dogmas and superstitions can be harmful to the society. Faith based on inner experiences can be helpful in creating a harmonious society.

Believing in God and doing his will makes us better to each other and make us love each other and have compassion for others. It most certainly serves as a guide to how we act.
