Baptism is for believing people, not for children of believing people. If your son doesn't know what is going on, why should he be baptized? He isn't a boat, as though you would christen him with a bottle of campaign or whatever. There isn't one example of a child being baptized in the bible. In every case, the one who believed, was baptized. I would stick with the Bible, teach your son the way of the Lord, and when he is ready, he should submit to baptism.

The purpose of a godparent is to assure that your child will be brought up to believe in God so having that person christened or baptized is in my opinion immaterial providing she believes in God. If she doesn't, why would you give her such a great responsibility? Is she a believer? If so, she need not be christened to serve in that role.

You are right that anyone can baptise- in fact, you can baptise yourself. But in truth, you can forget about water baptism today. It is meaningless, because far more non-Christians are baptised than Christians. Sinful people get baptised in water to pretend to be Christians, to lower standards, so that the embarrassment of real Christianity is diluted. There are very few 'pastors' today whose intent is not to make Christianity ineffectual, and they try to give themselve status by claiming to be the only person in their organisation who can baptise. They want to perpetuate a false Christianity that will not be persecuted, that dishonest people will find acceptable.
Getting somebody wet doesn't make any difference to them, no matter what 'magic words' are said. In Jesus' time, baptism was the way people 'signed up' to things- political or religious movements, following a leader of some sort. It was public declaration of intent. In the early church, people were persecuted or killed for being baptised. So your son needs to make his own decision about being a Christian, as does everyone who considers being one.
The way to 'be baptised' today is to let all your friends and associates know that you have committed your life to Christ- with actions, if not words. (Not necessarily at work- work is for work.) They will expect behaviour in accordance with that decision, and make it difficult for a convert to slide back. That will do as Christ intended with water baptism. Doing it that way may lose you friends, but that is what being a Christian always is.

Speak to the minister or priest who will be christening your son. She may need to be baptized first, or it might not matter. It doesn't have to be done at church, but it should be done with some care, so that she understands what she is about to do. If she is only doing it to make you happy, that's not really a baptism -- just a bath.

The big question is this: Is she a believer or not? If she doesn't believe then how can she be a godmother? If she is a believer then she should go to a priest or preacher, declare her faith and be Baptized during a service at church.
In cases of duress or emergency anyone can Baptize as long as the person being Baptized makes a declaration of faith. In the high churches it's usually the Nicene Creed or questions derived thereof.

I think if you look at the instances of baptism in the Bible, they were all done by believers. Let this be your guide. (I dont think christening a child is 'wrong' as such, but remember that he will need to be baptised when he makes an adult decision to follow Jesus too.)

Its all about the name.
Jesus is the name.
Col 3:17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, [do] all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.
Act 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
Act 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Rom 6:3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Rom 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. Rom 6:5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also [in the likeness] of [his] resurrection: ..............ECT

I think that being baptized does not make someone a christian. It's something we are told to do after we believe.
Alot of people come to the Lord on their death beds and never get baptized. As the bible says: Luke 23:39-43. And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, if thou be Christ, save thyself and us. 40. But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation? 41. And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss. 42. And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. 43. And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, to day shalt thou be with me in paradise.

Your son needs to first repent and be baptized Acts 2:38.
He also needs to be old enough to believe in what he is doing Mark 16:16.If you care about your son as I am sure that you do, won't you please read these scriptures prayerfully so it can be done properly as God intended it?
