Because GIMP was originally designed for computers that don't run Windows you will need to install the "GIMP Tool Kit" or GTK first so that it runs properly on Windows. You can get this from the first link below.

Once you have installed the GTK, download the latest version of GIMP for Windows (version 2.2.14) from the second link below.

Once you have everything installed make sure you check out the on-line version of "Grokking the GIMP" it will greatly help you learn to use the GIMP (the third link below)

You can download the latest version of GIMP here: [link]

GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a free software suitable for tasks as photo retouching, image authoring and image composition. GIMP is not as powerful as Photoshop, but it's by far the best free photo editing software on the market. You can augment it with plugins and extension and use it as a professional photo-retouching software. GIMP can be used as a simple paint program or a complex image-manipulation software (thanks also to to a very advanced scripting interface). Don't trust Adobe torrents or downloads from anywhere else, most are backdoored

On the one hand while I'm primarily an Open Source User (Linux and I'll come to that) i've been on the fringes of publishing since the seventies. Adobe has licensed fonts from Linotype and stuff like that which we need for commercial printing. As an open source project GIMP can't afford to. I still use a distro which emphasizes freedom and go through the trouble of addins like Separate+ because Adobe's copy-protection scheme writes to the boot loader and render Linux systems unbootable every time you use it. So GIMP lacks features we need and Adobe makes defective products.

Here's the link you need. First you need to install the GTK+2 Runtime Environment. (the second one on the page).

After that's installed, then install the one labeled "The GIMP for Windows" (the first one listed on the page)

Start here: http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html
